I’d like for this thread to be peaceful and quick. I have NHR 25 wk pullets and BO, Blue O, EE about 18 weeks pullets...currently offering oysters shells..but I don’t think they are interested. I have them on pellets that are from a local mill, compared to Purina brand. I realize pellets are controversial in the winter. We decided to try it since they have never layed. Do you think they will lay soon since typically these breeds lay around 6months?

We added supplemental lighting on a timer...very carefully. The pellets and crumbles were debated in the fall, over what to feed your chickens in the winter. I didn’t want to create any fuss.

Why are pellets controversial? Are those particular ones not meant for chicken feed?

Any of them could be laying any day now. My orpingtons have tended to lag behind a bit, my 4.5 month EE laid her first egg on Sunday. I feed all flock with wheat and corn (gasp!) and offer oyster shell on the side.
That’s great that you got an egg! We have the pullets in a coop right next to the older ones..except, one hen converted..she liked their digs better...:). So, when I get an egg in their boxes, I wish it was from them, but in reality, I know...

It's always exciting, isn't it?! I've got chickens that go back and forth between coops, as well. I wish they could talk...I'd ask them what the heck they're doing :p

Are any of your pullets "squatty" or getting brighter combs yet?

Oh yes! My NHR are full sized and their combs are beautiful! You should see the cockerels from that bunch! I can’t decide which one to keep they are sooo nice! Big and stout! Great dispositions because we’ve let them free range. Our other rooster, Spike...might just go in the freezer...yikes!
