So my pen is done for the ducks finally. I was going with just the ground as the floor. Figuring the ducks could forage for worms and eat the grass. But would putting down wood chips or something be better?

I use pine shavings in their coop. After a few days, I dump those shavings in their pen. If the shavings in their pen get too bad I rake them out and use them in the garden. Most of the time I can just add new shavings on top of the old ones and it keeps things nice and dry. I am talking about my small, night-time pen. During the day they roam the garden. Are you planning to keep them in this pen all the time?

Not all the time. They will have time out if it but it’s a large pen 20x20ft as I wanted them to have room to roam around In until we get perimeter fencing up to make the yard more secure

We also have the bare ground as our floor in the coop and that has become quite the muddy mess with all the rain and the daily changing of their water containers. I had some used pieces of indoor outdoor carpet so I put a few runners of that on the ground and that made a world of difference. No more muddy mess, easy to rinse the poo off with the garden hose and the ducks don't seem to mind it. They especially like it when I lift the corner of it up and they spot a Worm or two. :)
