Hi all,
I have a 7 month old hen who has a pendulous crop. I'm not sure how it happened... I've massaged it and tried to locate a lump or blockage, because at first I thought maybe it was because she had eaten something stringy that got tangled up in there. But when I massage her crop it doesn't feel hard, it's squishy and feels similar to a bag full of sand! Why would it be like that?
Anyway... I've tried to get her to vomit but holding her upside-down and squeezing her crop, but only small amounts of liquid come out. I put her on an antibiotic today, and gave her a couple doses of olive oil yesterday and today in a dropper hoping that it might lubricate things and get them moving. But there seems to be no change. She keeps eating and eating, so tonight I decided to separate her from the flock and withhold solids for a while. She's had normal poop under her roost in the morning, but not as much as the rest of the flock.
I'm considering getting her a crop bra next, but I'm wondering if it will do any good if I can't empty her crop manually.
It's really too bad... she's not laying anymore and I can't keep her if she doesn't lay. She may be desitned for the big crock pot in the sky.
