Hi all, I'm concerned about my girl Ginger. I only noticed her crop yesterday and it looks about the same today. I've read a few threads on the subject. Tomorrow, before she has any food, I will check it again. I'll give her yogurt and coconut oil. I will also smell her breath. I just wanted some eyes on these pics to see if anyone had an opinion based on the size, shape and location of her crop. Seems very low to me.

Thank you!

I'm not an expert, but it looks pretty low. Your post implies that you've checked it already. Did it empty?

Another couple of questions: How old is she? And what does she eat?

If it is pendulous, you can make a crop bra or use vet wrap to keep it from sagging so her food moves into her system.

I haven't massaged it yet, I've only felt it a bit.

She's in her second year.

I normally give them organic layer pellets but have switched it up lately. I have them a more natural mix of seeds and grain for awhile but last time I bought feed, I got the high protein stuff for molt recovery. I also occasionally give them scratch gains and meal worms as a treat.

Thanks Aunt Angus

I think you should make sure her crop is emptying overnight first. Check to see if it's empty first thing in the morning before she has access to food or water. It should be completely empty/flat.

I'll do that momentarily. They do have water in the henhouse, though.

She's back to normal, thank goodness.
Lesson learned ... I need to pay more attention to their appearance in the morning.
I'm still going to give them yogurt and maybe some coconut oil for gut health.

Thank you Aunt Angus

Yogurt is great!

I have a hen who is pushing 4 years old who gets a huuuuge crop. She tends to stuff herself. It worries me. Older birds are much more susceptible. I have a feeling my girl Poppy will need a bra someday!

I'm curious ... is the bra a temporary thing? Seems like once they need one, they'd need it for life.
