Okay I know there is probably more to the story, but in Pittsburgh a man was arrested for killing chickens at his house and fined $29,000.

I checked with the President of the Council of my Boro and he told me there were no ordinances in regards to chickens and that I could legally get some. I am not too worried about my little area, but is this story true of what could happen to people? I ask because we may move in a few years. The story seemed about extreme - getting hauled out of your house in handcuffs in front of the media. He probably had a bit more going against him than just chickens, but the fines were for the killing of his chickens.

Just curious if the penelties are that harsh for people.

Laws are a very strange thing. Remember that in the US, there are laws against many mundane things that aren't enforced, however if you get on the wrong side of an official in your local government then they will fine and nit pick you to death. There are tons of stories of people fighting their home owners association over a rule that they disagree with, and after tons of fines and leans, they end up homeless with the association owning their house.

Animal cruelty is against the law. Weather you go to jail or not is up to the common sense and discretion of the police officer. If someone reports you in rural Alabama for killing 4 chickens, you will most likely be fine. If you are in the center of new your city and someone reports you, the officer will most likely arrest you and you will be tazered at least twice.

If you are not a farmer, vet, or butcher, you need to be very discrete with your animal homicide.
