Thank you all! I am a several months away from starting but I am looking at Wyandottes due to the cold winters here.

What are winters like in your area - PA is big! You can add your location to your profile (something like Northern PA, for example) and that is helpful when others are replying to you.

Chickens deal with cold generally better than with the heat of the summer!

If you plan to order chicks from a hatchery, and if you have a specific breed in mind, you may want to place an order with the hatchery this winter as some breeds sell out. Wyandottes are popular and fairly easy to obtain, so unless you want a specific color type, you can generally wait longer to order chicks. It is also common to see Wyandottes at the farm stores too.

We have some Wyandottes: GLW (Gold Laced Wyandotte) and SLW (Silver Laced Wyandotte). They are a confident chicken and tend to be mid to upper ranking in our pecking order - never seen one at the bottom of the pecking order yet. Very pretty birds.

If you're looking for cold tolerant varieties and want something a little rarer, you should look into Chanteclers, Russian Orloffs, and Hollands. Faverolles are also quite cold hardy, and super sweet. Buckeyes were specifically developed for the winters in Ohio, so they'd probably be a good fit, too.
