I have people here all the time to get birds & they always seem to pick the meaties. I just tell them "If you get that 1 you have to eat it." I usually get "What

" so have to explain that it's a meat bird & will drop over dead if not butchered by a certain age. They usually pick a different bird, though I have sold a few to people who wanted meaties.
I haven't done too much checking about the age they should be butchered at, yet. What is the recommended age for the CRs? Although the CR's will be the first to be processed, we will be processing all except the "true pets" eventually. The layers will be given time to "dry up" before they go in the pot. Since we have so many that he want's to name I doubt we'll come up with enough food names or I'd give that a try. The buck I got this past season was named Spike. They're all wild and whole herd gets renamed every year, but my son loves naming everything even the wild birds that come to the feeders.
OK... just wondered. I've seen folks in TSC saying how cute the CRs are. Many have no clue about them as meat birds and I wonder how many folks take them home not realizing that many never live beyond 10 or 12 weeks if they aren't managed well, since they are so prone to heart and joint problems. I think the bins at TSC should be marked with a few more details to help folks make more informed decisions.
Sounds like you have a nice flock going and your son is lucky to be exposed to well rounded animal management growing up. I honestly think it is something many kids would really benefit from.
I agree with you (bins and teaching). I did (most of) my research beforehand and knew which ones were meaties before I went in to our TSC, but it we're a college town (as well as fairly rural) and I'm sure several were picked up because they were cute and the people who bought them have no clue what the breed is meant for or any of the issues they have.

Hey! It was good to see everybody on Sat at the show! Congrats LeBlackbird on your win! Sorry Blarney for sneaking out, thought we said goodbye! We were late meeting family at the Garden & Herb show @ the fairgrounds. We tried to cram too many things into this weekend.
I paid the price because my car exploded antifreeze all over the turnpike last night. : (

Can anyone give me some details on taking birds to auction. Roots or Green Dragon. I am clueless, but have to get rid of roos, as soon as possible. Which place is best? If I take them all up, am I guaranteed that all will go? Do I put them in a box, cause I don't have cages? Any inside info. is much appreciated.
