Ruminant News:

Goats-2
Blarney-1

Translation: upgrade in fence charger on Saturday has kept ONE goat in, YAY! Although....the other 2 are eating my landscape:(

New grounding rods went in last night....although I think I hear a visitor clip clopping on the deck right now.

I REFUSE to give up! There is a poop free deck in my future, I just know it!!

and on an unrelated note, Fisherlady, any news on the pup? Have you considered 'Mork' for a name? Hee hee.
No such thing as goat proof fence.

I have mine tied. She's chewing my $20 lunge line, but she hasn't chewed through it yet. Once we get the new shed up for her and the future goat, we have 4' no climb fence and electric tape to install. I hope that keeps them in... I am concerned about it now with all your issues, Blarney.
The cable tie outs for LARGE breed dogs work well.

I'm starting to think the same thing! Blarney, here's an idea: Go to your local prison and ask exactly what they use to contain inmates! I'm thinking 30 ft. tall chain linked fencing with 5 rows of barbed wire at the top, laced with electric fencing! On second thought, that probably wouldn't be enough!!
gig.gif
Nope, not enough.

YAY!!

Adding Sally candled again SHE HAS 17 Ancona Duck VIABLE so she will be SELLING EVERY SINGLE DUCKLING ASAP!

And that way she wont get divorce papers in the mail, hmmmm until he see's the Turkey eggs in the bator

I may be interested in some of those if hatch day is before I meet Rey for my geese.

It doesn't take a lot of mother to make vinegar. Actually you CAN do it with none.

Buy a gallon of cider. Must be raw, or pasturized, no preservitives!
Add wine or beer yeast and ferment into hard cider (use an airlock) bread yeast should work, too.
Once it is fermented, shake up your bottle of ACV to get the mother floating and add some to the now hard cider. It is best if it is in a container with a wide mouth at this point. Cover with cheese cloth or an old t shirt held on with string or rubber bands. It will attract bugs, but needs air. Leave sit in a warm dark area, and it will turn in to vinegar.

DON'T USE METAL CONTAINERS!

Basically, sugar plus yeast creates alcohol then
Alcohol plus mother makes vinegar.
Two steps, thats all.

If you use beer as your alcohol, you get malt vinegar.
Red wine - red wine vinegar
Etc.
Add herbs to wine vinegar, create an expensive specialty item, lol
I need to learn how to do this.

Louise's Country Closet
Homemade Apple Cider Vinegar Ingredients:
Cores and peels from 6-8 apples 2 TBS. Honey place the cores and peels in a large, wide-mouthed jar. Used a 4-cup jar, but you can adjust the size of the jar to the amount of apple scraps you’re using.
Cover the scraps with water and stir in the honey.
Place a paper towel on top of the jar, and secure it with a band.
Let the mixture soak for 2 weeks, and then strain out the liquid.
Return the liquid to the jar and cover it again with a paper towel and band. Leave it for 4 more weeks, stirring daily.
Taste it and see if it has the acidity you would like. If it does, transfer it to a covered bottle for storage. If not, leave it in the wide-mouthed jar for a little while longer, checking every few days.

And this.

I'm having the same issue over here. The Mill has Speckled Sussex Pullets in, and I'm really fighting myself not to go there. I have a plan too! Even though my plans always change at the last minute!!

Sallyyyyyy!!!! I am having a problem with my eggs in the incubator! They have been in there for almost 24 hours, and they aren't hatching yet! What am I doing wrong?

One day, and I am already antsy. I really thought I would be a calm hatcher (beyond the whole "what can go wrong, will" thing).

I, too have a plan. The reality is that I only see being able to separate one rooster with some hens. Meaning I have 3 roosters. The BCM rooster is in a pen with his girls. Shadow (I really need to make 100% he is an Ameraucana) will be put in with his mate, Midnight and six other girls. and Rocky the RIR will have five girls to make red and black sex links with.
I am really trying to get down to Ameraucanas, BCM and a layer pen. I just feel too bad for the majority of the girls I have to sell them off.

Yeah, they're listed on the Hbg. CL also. They have a good reputation. I am making a special effort to ignore their sale. You, however, should go.

And York, and Cumberland Valley, and I'm sure if we check Lancaster and Reading. I believe I got my waterers from them. They seemed to have good quality birds when we were there.

So you should get Reyvaughn's hens. It's quite obvious.

LMAO. Ummm...NO! Dels were not in my plan...they came with my Wellies.

Arrrrrrrgh!!!

LMAO...and this is why I don't want goats...actually I don't like goats milk...so that's why I don't want them.

Have my fellow Western Pennsylvanian chicken mommas heard that the cicada are supposed to hatch this year?! I'm so excited.

I raise meal worms for the girls to have in the winter since everything is frozen here in the winter so knowing that the cicada are coming is great! I've read posts from ppl out west who gather grasshoppers when they swarm and freeze them.

Better believe I'm gonna have some containers of cicada in the freezer for this winter. The girls are gonna be soooo happy!

Of course they're going to swarm this year. 2 Octobers ago we had the Halloween Snow Storm. Last October we had Hurricane Sandy. This October we're getting married, it'll be a swarm of locusts.

To those of your "near" me, there is an estate auction on the 27th which includes a farm, with a rather large coop, several feeders, waterers, a cage for transport etc. Hope someone can get some good stuff at a good deal...we of course are camping that weekend.
