Betta can you find a pic of the brand you use? how much do you add a day and initially?  I will have these ducks hatching soon, so that counts as niacin for ducks too correct?

I use Fleischmann's. You have to get it from bulk stores, because even Wally world charges $4 for the little 4oz jars of it. It comes vacuum packed in 1lb foil packs and two are packaged together. I use maybe 3 tablespoons on the bottom of the bucket, add a gallon and a half of hot water (yeast first, water second helps dissolve it), then I do 7 overflowing scoops of mash. My scoop is the plastic 2 cup dog food scoop from the Dollar Tree.

Oh good, thanks! I know the girls love when I give them spent grains...so figured they'd love the FF too. And I'm tired of going through 200-300 lbs of feed a month!
Looking like we will give this a try, the coop cleaning benefit alone is enough to get me to give it a shot!
I wish I could say I only used that. But I have cut the bill in half with FF, my eggs are HUMOUNGOUS don't fit in a carton! I have to tape lids shut!
I was tired of cleaning coops and mostly cleaning all that wasted feed! with dry feed they PICK through it!
Ours don't pick through the feed or throw it out of the feeders, so I guess we are lucky with that.... but since we can feed it most of the time and still take breaks when we go for a weekend it makes sense to give it a shot and see how they like it.

Betta... when you use the yeast instead of the ACV/mothers how much do you use per 5 gallon bucket?

FF HOT WATER NO STRAIN METHOD....

I will add that DH wasn't happy about helping me to video and I also grabbed the first audio on the list!
And DH made me take out the comment about why I don't use whole grains,
you know that whole ever eat corn and see what comes back out? LMAO!

This is a question from another thread "Today I need to add more feed. I swear I read you need to leave 1/2" to an inch of water on top. I guess not."

my comment.....
REMEMBER this is the HOT WATER, NO STRAIN method! instead of all that water on top, it settles at the bottom because of the "loaf" on top! so the bottom of the feed will always be wetter than the top and hold some of the brewing juices needed for next batch! Just always leave about 4" in the pot after you pull your feed to use for your next batch!

I ran a heater on mine all winter too because our basement is COLD. It's pretty fermented this way. As long as mine stays above about 50F I get a pretty good reaction. I just sit a feed sack across the tp of my buckets to keep dirt & stuff out. It doesn't fir tight at all, just covers to keep stuff out. I wish that's all I went through.

Yes, but I have a tenth of the amount of chickens you do.

I'm lucky in that they don't pick through or waste feed. Funnily...I emptied the brooders...and dumped the crap in the compost pile...to find the big birds happily going through it and eating that feed too.....pigs.

ATTENTION BLARNEY: THEY'RE COMING!!!!

I'm going to try it too! But I do need to figure a few things out first. Like, how often do you give it to them? My birds have access to their food all day. Should I leave it this way in addition to the FF. They are temporarily on lockdown so can't get out to free range. Is Mash the same as crumble?? Anyone feel free to answer

I only feed in the morning, but when summer arrives I may do it before bed too, because of bug issues with heat.
Time will tell with summer heat.

Mash is basically the same as crumble and pellet. They make a mash, add somewater or whatever to make it stick together, then use an extruder to make pellets (like making spaghetti noodles), then these are gently crushed for crumbles.
The difference is that mash is typically locally grown grains and it's much cheaper.
