SS I had no luck with it actually fermenting unless the room was stifling over 80 degrees with cold water. I keep running into people that try and fail because they cant get it to brew. Wet feed is always better than dry anyways, that feed was never near as "potent" as doing it this way either.

FF HOT WATER NO STRAIN METHOD.... I will add that DH wasn't happy about helping me to video and I also grabbed the first audio on the list! And DH made me take out the comment about why I don't use whole grains, you know that whole ever eat corn and see what comes back out? LMAO! This is a question from another thread "Today I need to add more feed. I swear I read you need to leave 1/2" to an inch of water on top. I guess not." my comment..... REMEMBER this is the HOT WATER, NO STRAIN method! instead of all that water on top, it settles at the bottom because of the "loaf" on top! so the bottom of the feed will always be wetter than the top and hold some of the brewing juices needed for next batch! Just always leave about 4" in the pot after you pull your feed to use for your next batch!
Sally...do I have to cover it to make it ferment better? I just have a small bucket right now, sitting in my kitchen. We're going away for the weekend...so I didn't want to start a whole bucket.
Franklin County here looking to acquire a few naked neck pullets if anyone has any info please message me!
Welcome! I don't know if anyone has naked necks...but I'm sure someone will pipe up soon enough!

Missy I actually don't cover it at all, but if I see flies starting up I will throw a cheap pc of cheese cloth over it! IT NEEDS as much air as possible! Some people use a pair of nylons!

Oh good, thanks! I know the girls love when I give them spent grains...so figured they'd love the FF too. And I'm tired of going through 200-300 lbs of feed a month!

Betta doesn't that get costly or is the yeast cheaper than reg bread yeast?  I couldn't believe the cost of bread yeast in the store when Ariel gave me that bread recipe!

I buy mine at Sam's Club. 2lbs for $4. A pound will last me about 6 months, so it adds $4 per year to my feed bill, but saves FAR more than not using it. I probably use 75% of what I used to. If my birds didn't binge, I'd probably save more. They'll come in with bulging crops and attack the bowls like rabid animals. Drives me CRAZY!

Using the yeast, I mix it up and can feed within 20 minutes. I prefer to wait at least an hour, but 20 minutes is enough for the grain to soak up some water and the yeast to get started. It'll continue fermentation in the crop, which doesn't hurt the birds.

I ran a heater on mine all winter too because our basement is COLD. It's pretty fermented this way. As long as mine stays above about 50F I get a pretty good reaction.

I just sit a feed sack across the tp of my buckets to keep dirt & stuff out. It doesn't fir tight at all, just covers to keep stuff out.

I wish that's all I went through.

I wish I could say I only used that. But I have cut the bill in half with FF, my eggs are HUMOUNGOUS don't fit in a carton! I have to tape lids shut!
I was tired of cleaning coops and mostly cleaning all that wasted feed! with dry feed they PICK through it!
