I'm must be strange (OK, I am). I don't put my chickens in when it storms. Their coop is always open during the day, they actually seem to like to come out in the rain. I think its cooling, or they just take after me and are strange.
If the chickens are out when the weather turns we just let them decide. They can hang out under the coop or on the porch of the coop (4x12 covered porch on front) and there are a number of porches on the house and trailers around they can get under if it bothers them. They seem to enjoy being out in it until it gets really, really heavy. They do seem to really enjoy the moderate showers. I don't blame them! Would have loved some rain today to cool things off.
I have bright sunshine and blue skies. I hope the chicks are okay when the storm comes ( I took the moms away this morning).
Was hot and bright here also. I had to mow at our family property in Elk Co and then came home to do it here too. Was miserable hot. The dogs went with me to camp and they spent the 2+ hrs I was mowing lounging under a porch watching....LOL... they did come out to offer moral support when I stopped to refuel or get a drink though. I need to teach them how to run a weed eater!

Temp of 100 degrees on a bank display on the way home, but my vehicle thermometer said it was only 90.

I am used to the 100+ temps after living in Oklahoma, we had 63 days of 100+ heat in 2011 and that was HORRIBLE!!! After over a year here I am still not used to the humidity, that kills me, I just can't function properly in it!!

But then on the other side of things .....

Does anyone have any pullets for me to buy?

I like:

EE
New Hampshire Red
Barred Rock
Gold laced Wyandotte
Welsummer
silver laced Wyandotte

Partridge rock

I was buying birds tomorrow but the seller kinda overpromised.................so now I am considering my options and feeling bummed

Sorry things didn't work out....you should be ****** not disappointed....given the variety of types you want you need to go to big hatchery or petchickens.com....and get day old chicks...other wise, get some pullets from folks here....you should get three and around the same age......if you buy two and one dies the other will have a hard time.....my two cents....

thanks guys..............

I am new to this whole thing and been reading up etc etc etc.

Then when I said what I liked ( not expecting to get them all but just to see if they had any of those) and the seller said he had 4 of them! wahoo I was thrilled. So I am bummed because he got me all excited and promised something he could not deliver.

I don't really know what to expect because of me newness.....................At this time I am doing okay because I will get 2-3 birds tomorrow and begin the new adventure of having chickens in my backyard..............and that is cool!

I just don't like it when people say they have something ---------definitely etc...........and you get all excited and then they say-------oh sorry I actually don't have it................ but I digress.......

thanks folks for your patience with my learning curve!

Lets hope my coop and run that are not entirely finished will also work out . And with 2 -3 new birds arriving at my place tomorrow----with strong afternoon thunderstorms forecasted that it still works out.

stay tuned for more pictures etc..............

Not sure what is going on this year, I have never had predators to the point that they are this year..

We'd take care of it if we were closer... that sucks. We lost a hen last week but think it was most likely a stray dog going through... sure makes you sick to your stomach.

As far as reason... I attribute much of it to the reduced interest in hunting (kids used to love going out for small game and such, but don't seem to as much anymore and work schedules for Dads make it even harder) and reduced trapping for fur. Demand/price on furs really took a nosedive over the last 10 yrs or so and folks don't have the time to walk their trap lines twice a day as easy, so another decline in the control methods which used to keep them in check.

I would imagine that feeding on garbage also helped improve the population and survival rate also. With folks moving into the country they have a lot more garbage piles to choose from!
