i would say Roo.

oh no...you mean my peaches is a 'paul'....mine hasen't crowed or anything....I have a new 12wk roo that is doing the 'roo thing'....I'd think at 5+mos there'e be some crowing or romantic activities....,my two cents....

Lisa, did you get the two girls today?
Thank you for asking...............I actually ended up postponing just a bit.

I will get them either tues or Thursday.......................... but the good news is that it was hot today but not as bad as the last few days and I got to continue my coop work.

I think I did pretty well on it.............considering I learned carpentry and used scraps and craigs list items! I purchased screws and hinges......and things I hope to put on to lock up the many moveable doors and drawers.

that's my big project for tomorrow...........attaching locks etc..............

The run is still not done but I see that it may come together...................

I have been pushing myself to get it done as soon as possible because....................I am hoping that my family finds out what I am up to once the cute and adorable birds are onsite..............and there is no turning back.

With this heat and with my learning curve..................I just couldn't pull I it off by today! but tues or thurs..........probably Thursday because its an hour drive and I work in the am.

I can provide pics tomorrow of my coop in its current condition.

last piece of info...............I sustained a bit of a nasty injury to my shin today when a cinder block just jumped out of nowhere and tripped me! I was really scared I might have hurt myself more in my less than graceful fall. At this point it looks like it will be a very large and nasty bruise but I will live!

that's my update.....................

Got the nest boxes done, both in the coop and one for out in the yard. Stuck a few ping pong balls into them, now it's all up to the girls. So it will probably be another 2-4 wks til we find any.

We also caught Jäger doing his "I'm sexy" dance in front of the one RSL, and two of the white girls (not sure which breed/s) with larger wattles went over to watch. So we may have fertile eggs right off the bat. Gavin said, "Too bad you hate that song 'I'm sexy and I know it' Momma. It'd be great to make a video with him dancing and that playing." All I could do was shake my head and try not to laugh...I failed miserably.

How long can eggs still be fertile after a rooster is gone? Since my Silkie rooster went MIA I would like to put a few of my eggs in the incubator. He has been gone for a week now (I think).

I think 2 weeks is the most common time period I've heard. It can't hurt to set some eggs now.

Just a guess, you never know for sure until they crow or lay an egg.

question for this group---------------how much of a problem do people have with flies around their coop and run............

I would not like to have a lot of flies...............yuck!

If you do have flies--------------what have people found that is helpful way to reduce or eliminate them?

you are bound to have some....I have my coop/pen near my compost pile and away from the house....the chooks will eat/trample all the grass in the pen....I throw some mulched leaves in the pen every now and then....you could just hose you pen down often or I think MissPurdy has filled her's will sand and does the kitty litter thing....there were some pics way back when...

and on a side note peaches is peaches not paul....at least Mr. Roo-ski thinks so.....and no bad jokes about a gay rooster.!

I've learned if you have poop, you'll have flies. I picked up some fly catchers at TSC that use a liquid attractant. A cheaper way to go it take a 2 liter bottle, cut the top off and invert it, poke holes in it to hang, and place some sugar water inside.
