I also had mixed feelings.

I think the author clearly has not raised chickens or was not particularly informed about the animal.

He was just sort of poking light heartedly at the info he had...................it wasn't overly funny or ...................odd.............

the peta thing seemed odd to me.............

the rest just kinda trivial and could have been used as material for a better writer to make a better piece..........

just thought I would see what real chicken lovers impressions might be.........

Well Gavin and I went for a lovely Sunday drive to Weatherly to pick up some ducks that needed rehomed and we got 3 free 5-wk-old serama chicks to boot. They were very nice people and had a nice set up. Anyway here are Gandalf, Goldberry and Rosie Cotton (left to right), with Gavin laying by them. I'll get a pic of the ducks once they're settled into the quarantine pen.

The PETA stuff doesn't surprise me in the least. I don't remember how long ago it was, but it was on the news. A bunch of them went out dressed as bears during bear season to "prove the meat is wasted," or something like that. I stopped donating to most animal groups, because PETA got some funding from them.
It's fine to want ethical treatment of animals, I'm all for it through all animal industries, but these people take things too far.

Please help if you can, I have a 5-6 month old Buff Orpington that has had ribbon like stools for the past nearly 2 weeks. Most times they are normal looking other than being thin. She on occasion does have watery poop but never have I seen any blood in it. Anyway, besides that issue, my hubby said that when he went to leave them out of the coop this morning Gertie came out & promptly threw up water, no blood. She acts very healthy & is growng nicely but something is just not right & being a new chicken mommy I am at a loss what to do for her. She hasn't started laying yet but the other chicken, Gracie, that I got at the same time as her has been laying now for a week. We went to the Tractor Supply store & told the clerk there about her poop & he suggested that we get the Purina medicated food & mix it half & half with their food. We did this & they have been on the mixture a week now but there is no difference in Gertie's poop. She just started the throwing up water today as far as we know. What can be done? I don't want to lose her because of my incompetence as a new mommy. Any suggestions from any one please....

Vicki, it sounds like worms. Since you only have a couple of chickens I recommend getting Ivermectin. You can get it for $3.50 a tube at TSC (Durvet brand, generic yellow tube). It says its for horses. What you want to do is give them one "click" of the medicine by mouth. You will see what I mean when you see the tube, and turn it once. You can put it right inside there mouth. You can give a second dose 5-7 days later to be sure all the worms were gotten, or you could also use safe-guard. It kills a different kind of worm. You can PM if you have any questions.

Thanks, I'll try what you say, I'm so worried. I bought the apple cider vinegar but didn't start it yet, I'll do that today. She is acting & looking the picture of health. She is noticably larger than Gracie, as she has been since we bought them. I'll post their recent pics as well as a pic of Gerties poop...my camera was putting too much orange/red in pics & I have since adjusted it so while the pic looks like there is blood in the poop, I assure you it is only from the camera. (I took pics of my bro in law & his wife & they looked like they overdosed on self tanning lotion...lol) The first pic is Gracie & Gertie is in the 2nd one. And of course the poop is pretty self explanatory....lol Thanks so much for your prompt response. At this point I don't think I need to go out & get Calf Manna yet as she seems to be growing normally. I know she is eating OK as I watch them in their run area a lot through out the day & they do free range in my fenced in yard each evening for an hour or 2 as weather permits.

Honestly the poop doesn't look too bad, to me anyway. Looks like there is grass mixed in there. I think if you get some grit for them, throw it in the coop or in a small dish, that should help grid things up. And like heather said deworming should help.

Thanks I'll go to the TSC & get some tomorrow, guess it can't hurt them. Should I give it to both? And if I miss some poop in the yard when I clean up after they have been out free ranging & my dog eats their poop, will she get the same worms? She thinks the poop is great chicken snacks!! Yuck!

I thought it looked like grass or straw too so I keep grit down in their yard, some on the ground & some in a dish that they can peck at all day while they are in their pen. Thanks. I may just be a worry wart first time chicken mommy...lol

Our first time in the sun! They were scared at first. Everyone was jumping on me and wouldn't leave my legs. It felt good knowing they look to me for protection.
