THERE HERE!

Of course there is always a story...............................

I think you all are gonna think I did the wrong thing................I kinda think I might have done the wrong thing...................but here it is

I know have 3        6wk old chickens that lived together and one laying hen..........a new Hampshire red

the 3 younger ones are:  silver laced Wyandotte, golden laced Wyandotte and easter egger
this was not the plan

this guy I purchased from keeps changing what he has available ----even though on Thursday he called to confirm

I was expecting  2 laying hens and 2-- 6wk olds and was discussing how to house them gradually together,,,,,,I am sure you recall.

Well now this 3:1 difference seems odd....................  the 3 youner ones are all huddled together in an upper roost in the coop, and the one big laying hen is by herself on a different roost bar.
I hope she does not feel lonely.

Its okay for the 3 because they are together and out of reach of the big hen.

I put water and grower mix in the coop and some watermelon.

the laying hen has her mouth open a lot..................is she panting or hot or stressed?

the 3 youngers are making cute sounds and seem cozy together...........

Its too dark for good pictures-----but I will definitely post tomorrow!

So now the stories will continue with who is getting along with who..................I DO WISH they were all the same age and had lived together..............just like you all recommended..............

I don't think I will purchase from this chicken guy again because he is constantly changing things up!

One thing he said to me too was the DE doesn't really work...........its just a myth.....................yet everywhere else I read good things about it.................

not sure he truly is informed?

This guy doesn't sound reliable, reputable or knowledgeable. As for the chicken with the open mouth, I am guessing (hoping) it is stress. Since it is one adult hen and 3 6 week old birds, they might be ok together. She will establish her dominance but there won't be an argument about it so it might not be too bad. Try putting them together and see what happens. Then, make a note to never go to that guy again.

yeppers....imho the hawk was after the marans babies...I think it was either a Broad Wing or Red Tail....I'd really hate to see my young roo mauled but I think his presence counts and the LFs might be too big for attack by a smaller predator hawks.......and my two pooches keep the ground predators backed off...just need to keep an eye for the next few days.....

I wouldn't count on that hawk being too small to attack your LF. He will still take them down. A lot of people picture a hawk swooping down and carrying off a chicken but that's not how it happens. It will swoop down and attack the chicken right on the ground, grab it by the neck and choke it out or rip out its wind pipe or jugular vein. Then proceed to eat it right there on the ground. You can run some fishing line around or something but nothing but an enclosed pen is a guarantee. I hope you don't have any problems. Good luck!

thanks! that is kinda what I am hoping. I am hoping that the big hen will not fee threatened ..............as you say.........will have established her dominance................and the 3 younger ones have each other to be with.

I have already made the note about this guy!

what are your thoughts about DE-----diamote.........earth ( I am not sure how to spell it)
It seems like what I was reading about seemed legit..............he said he heard it was a myth...............

Quote: DE works for some things but not for others. It helps keep odors down & the amonia smell out of the coop/run, will help prevent mites/lice but will not get rid of them once present. If you see actual mites/lice on your birds you will need to use something else to treat them. Use the DE in the dustbath area to help prevent infestation. I have heard it will help with worms as well but have not done further research there.

It all depends on what you are using it for. It's not a miracle cure for everything under the sun but there are a lot of uses for it.

So glad you've got your chickens, Lisa! We use DE routinely to keep runs dry and smelling good.

Tonight I stopped at my neighbor's coop had water pooled on the tarp covering that was actually breaking the run support walls with the weight. So I let myself into their run and empty the water off the tarp, check on everyone and Thank God their rooster is nice. What I failed to consider was the latch on the outside of the run, but none on the inside. No phone with me....feeling kind of stupid. Good thing I brought a stick in with me to push the water off with, I used it to shimmy the latch open. I it would probably have been days before my husband noticed me gone.

Sorry but that absolutely cracks me up! I KNOW I would do that same thing everyday. Knowing that, when I built my coops and runs, I made sure to design the lock system so that it can be easily opened from the inside.

Lol! I am so glad I'm not the only one who has done this. Of course it was my own run I was locked inside of when it happened to me. I was screaming for my husband, searching around for a way out. I could get the top latch with a stick but not the bottom one. Finally my husband came to look for me. Now I have it rigged so I can pull a string from the inside and it opens both latches. Good times :)

Lisa, I'm so happy you finally got your chickens! Take lots of pictures tomorrow!
