I have a similar brand. Can't see it in the picture, but the electrical cord is connected to a flat, foil-covered plate that is tucked against to plastic bottom of the bowl. This is my plan:
I currently put my plastic waterer inside a slightly bigger plastic pan, like the kind under a flowerpot ( keeps spills to minimum, those waterers are so shallow!). I figure if I take the foil plate off the dog bowl and sandwich it directly under the waterer it will have good contact and I can keep using my regular waterer with minimal spills. I'm afraid a big open pet dish will just lead to wet, cold, mad chickens!
Quote: The only way to really eliminate flies is to get rid of the poop. I completely cleaned all pens, even hosed the runs, last week & the flies are so much better. Even if you just wash away the loose stuff from the top layer of soil in the runs it helps immensely.
Quote: I have mostly watwerfowl at this point & have been comsidering doing 1 big pen for all of them for the winter. Then I would onlty need 1 pool & 1 deicer for them & something for the chickens, who I was also thinking about pitching in together for the winter. That would only leave turkeys & quail to get water to (guineas are already joining the chickens). I may even toss my trio of slates in the coop for the winter. I just need to get some more roosts in there since a few of the birds seem to0 think my nesting boxes make good roosts. A couple of my roosts weren't up very well (thank JJ for that 1) & collapsed when the birds started to get too big. I think I should have plenty of room to combine them for the winter once I sell/process the spare roos & sell the extra guineas. The quail are either on the sale list so I don't have to deal with them for the winter (got rid of most last winter too) or will be heading back to the basement once things begin to freeze, which I really don't want to do. Only concern I have left then will be the call ducks since I'm a bit afraid to stuff them in with the geese for the winter. They may end up in with the chickens.![]()
