Annie:

There is a product at Home Depot, poly...something(plumbing isle)...it is sold by the foot and the roll is 4' in length. It is a rubberized material that folks put behind the wall around the tub/shower in the bathroom...if memory serves its about 5$/ft....might be worth a look.....
Annie,

I have a large amount of roofing felt/tar paper left over from the house. Found it in the basementand used for me coop. I'll hook you up if you can make it down here to DelCo. Shoot me a PM with the measurements of your roof if you're interested.

Wingstone,

You can legally process and sell up to 1000 birds under the USDA exemption, as long as you do not sell them out of state. I'm not sure of all the specifics as far as your set up, but I know of some folks that legally process outdoors under a pavilion. Somewhere back hundreds of pages in this thread, I think I may have posted some links.

Thanks Stake,,,fortunately I already have a lot of the stainless steel..
Really need to understand these laws better,,I am sure that it is different depending on whether I do the transporting off the farm or not...
Do they word these things so confusingly on purpose??

This is what I am getting out of the way hinge are written also.....it gets a little confusing when I try o find out if this only applies to the chicken,,,what about the turkey, quail, and possibly rabbit in the future....how much of this goes on the books also...how good do my records have to be....

I really need to turn off auto correct on this tablet....it is annoying

I know enough to add to the confusion. You can sell your processed birds at places like farmers markets, directly to the user.

You can process other kinds of poultry than chickens to sell, but IIRC, larger birds like turkeys count as 2 for the purpose of selling less than 1000.

Since rabbits are not poultry, they come under a different set of rules, which I'm half remembering as requiring USDA inspection. Probably true, since you never see local rabbit meat for sale.

I would imagine that you would need to keep pretty good records, since being allowed to use the exemption requires that you know how many birds you process. Of course, your farm insurance policy would need to cover the processing, and you would need records anyway in case you ever had a claim.

Check this publication out. See page 11 for the beginning of the poultry rules. One of the authors ran a successful pastured poultry operation for many years. http://agmarketing.extension.psu.edu/Processing/PDFs/FarmerGuide.pdf

Gavin's new call ducks, as he says "They're so dadgum cute!"

They are really cute! This may be obvious to most, but I'm gonna ask anyway...

Are their wings clipped or are they pinioned or are they in a covered enclosure? A friend got some last year and he swore their wings were clipped. I told him you have to re-clip after they moult, but he said they were fine. However, after about 5 months of them not even trying to fly, they took off over the neighbors house never to be seen again... His 5 yr old daughter was a mess. For cute, little domestic ducks, they still have a pretty strong innate urge to migrate!!!

I think I might have contracted some type of weird disease and I would like to blame my chickens .............or this blog.............or someone?????

You see-----I just got this crazy idea to build my own chicken coop with all repurposed materials..........and raise "just a few" chickens in my backyard.........a small
project...........use low cost items and make it nice and natural for the chickens and acceptable to my surburban neighborhood.

Now..........it seems I am

spending more money an special treats for the girls than their actual food costs.
thinking of interesting décor around the run........just bought some daffodil bulbs and am planning a light sun spring lettuce garden

and today-----a very serious symptom........hope its not .too late for me.....but while at the tractor supply store to pick up some more basic poultry food I bought this item
which cost more than a 50 lb bag of pellets.........

MORE THAN 50 lb bag of PELLETS...............

honestly ----------I don't think the chickens care what type of container their food comes in ...........just that it comes frequently and is yummy
they stand in their food
poop in their food
scratch wood chips into their food bowl............etc etc etc

I have been working on keeping the food bowls upright and free from non-food materials problem regularly.............with mixed results.......and TODAY

I was sooooooo happy when I found this:

its soooo cute! and adorondack swing as a feeder...................wahoo! and my containers fit in................and I think I have this condition or disease really bad like there is no turning back!

Yet I don't think I want the cure either..................

Just sharing!

Oh no.........I already have some of those symptoms at this time............its a serious case........might be chronic.........

I am consider olive eggers or chocolate egg layers for the spring.............only problem is I might need to build a second coop or a bigger coop...........that's crazy----I just built this one! in a heat wave no less! but raising from a chick would be so fun and cute.........never done that an all
and then green and dark brown, and light brown and blue eggs would be a nice assortment..............now why do I need a nice assortment...........I really don't know a good answer to this.........its just like a collectors and nature lovers condition...............hard to explain yet very persistent.............

If I could keep this fun hobby and have it pay for itself..........that would at least make more logical senses......

I have to review some of the rules regarding selling eggs etc.............I don't want trouble..............I have been giving them to family and friends yet once I start getting more eggs I would love to sell them so I can pay for at least the food costs....................the extra décor costs well...........that's just collateral damage!
