wow that sounds scary on quite a number of levels!

I would not have thought that the rooster would be in danger!............drowning a rooster by a hen.........oh my! not nice at all! what did that bad rooster do to her?
then you say-----it took awhile for her to get used to him.............geesh -------that seems like a big understatement.........and him to get "used to" her not trying to drown him?????
oh my these birds sure have some spunk!

if there is cocci in my soil ........and my hens are okay................does that mean they are immune or??????? just lucky.........?

I just brought home a new roo on thursday..He is a Frizzle/Silkie Mix has the funniest crow and doesnt start crowing till I leave them out of their coop in the morning soooo prefect ! :) Exactly what i wanted. Just hope it stays that way....

Anyway...my head girl gave him a run for his money the first day. I put him up in the coop with the girls that night and there wasnt much of a fight at all even the next day. Other than she didnt take well at first to someone telling her what to do..

And to the stories about the silkies...my little black hen is a pistol tooo. She is a sweetheart to me but when someone makes her mad she throws a fit on them...I was surprised when I added my two Swedish Flower Hens into to group that she was the only one that picked on them and was mean to them....Everyone else didnt have much to say about it...

My girls are very tame in comparison to these stories! I don't think I would like the aggression worry.................mine seem to play nice and seem pretty happy.
Lisa:

I think you were lucky that your older girl was a sweetie...and your younger girls will be too because of....I was lucky that my original alpha girl and girls were easy going, they gave my roo a bit of a hard time but until I added the marans chicks (and later the baby Basque roo baby) everyone behaved well....now things still go well, but the GLWs have gotten a bit snitty and my dorks don't want to deal with any of the new chooks...there is no clear pecking order and I have a second broody girl sitting on eggs...on the other hand, my big roo is a good guy and has established himself, and the baby basque roo is a real nice guy...the Marans give a hard time to the dorks, but are intimidated by the GLWs and BOs...they also are more accepting of the baby basque..net sum, every time you change the dynamics..the karma changes...if you add babies in the spring, add two at a time...that will not allow your flock to focus on an individual...and know that any changes affect all...my two cents...

I honestly thought it was a wild bird at first because they're always on the window sills looking for bugs that are trying to get inside this time of year. But when it was still pecking when I swung my arm, I looked and there's this lil lady staring me in the face. The head of my bed is right under this window, my luck this will be the new wake up call from them...

There've been 5 more girls in that window since I took that pic, and who knows how many before that... BRATS!!!!
BG:

I think thats pretty nice....pretty soon they'll know when you sit up and put your slipper on, food is coming....antics on the window ledge...they'll be fighting over a perch...

my baby roo is 10 weeks...still has the baby chirps going....and likes to hang under my feet so the big birds don't give him a hard time...your garden looks great...I've let my girls in mine and they have picked over all but the highest hanging tomatoes etc...

He is right!! They are cute and cool!! Wish I had a pond..so many feathered friends out there.... you have a pond?...I think somewhere along the way I have already asked that, maybe it wasn't you...but I am old and need reminded

so cool!!..hahaha, have a question though..How in the world are those big birds standing there?? Is your window sill that big??hahaha
We have one of those garden ponds, it's one sid is a retaining wall and the other s are the hillside, my mom had it put in years ago. We (well mostly Gavin) cleaned it today, and those three jumped right in as soon as the hose was running.

The storm window is missing so she's perched where the screen or glass would normally be. I think that's why she was pecking so much, there's only maybe 6 inches between the interior window and the frame for the storm window.

I know...and I'm not looking forward to it. I can't walk outside without being swarmed as it is...

LittleMissPurdy, your chooks are gorgeous! What is the black one, I love it! They look very happy and healthy too!

BirdSByGavin, I would love to have some chooks peeking in my window! That pic was so funny, I had to show my husband. :D

Here is an update on my coop:

Third wall went up today, along with insulation I found at a yard sale yesterday (2$ for a huge sheet!). Don't worry, I will be covering the insulation! Pics coming soon, I don't see the option to add them right now.

That's is the picture of the three walls finally up. The back wall will (hopefully) be a huge door so I have easy access to clean the entire coop. I put hinges on, but after I attached the door, the hinges wouldn't open, so I have to redo them. It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it, right? :old

Above pic shows hinges that have now been removed. One thing I forgot to do was to cut out the hole for the door and the nest boxes, so I will have to do that with the walls in position! :fl.

I was very thankful to find leftover shingles from re-roofing our shed. I know it is customary to use roofing paper underneath shingles, but do you guys think I could use leftover plastic mulch bags stapled down? I think I just need a fairly watertight surface before I install the shingles. Thoughts?

I know where to get Call eggs for hatching next year.... ;)

The drake, Digger, is already "doing" his thing lol. Gavin named the noisier of the two hens Katy...I love him, I love him, I love him... :he

The only thing I would worry about would be the bags disintegrating, a lot of the newer mulch bags are biodegradable. You could try painters type plastic, sold by the sheet or roll at any home improvement store. The extra can be used for a any number if things, including enclosing the run for a wind break in winter, if you get the roll that is.
But that will also break down eventually too. Your best bet for longevity would be tar paper or another roofing paper.
