well most of you know that I am very new to raising chickens..........I have 4 chickens and 3 of them are almost at laying age.   They will "come of age" in mid Oct/mid Nov

I am already thinking it would be so cool to have a few chicks to raise in the spring.

I could order day old chicks etc........or maybe some of you all will have chicks .......

another idea...........and this is my question for you all........has anyone ever had a rooster just come and "visit" for a short time to fertilize some of the gals?

Would that even work?   I am wondering if the rooster would feel comfortable in a new setting and the girls and what about possible sharing of diseases?

What do you all think about this?

Lisa, I don't think that having a rooster to visit would be a good idea. Even of your chickens aren't sick, your soil could have cocci and the rooster might get sick beacuse he wouldn't be immune to it. Depending on pecking order, your girls might beat up the rooster. My silkie beat the snot out of my new rooster when I got him. She tried to drown him. Took awhile for her to get used to him.

wow that sounds scary on quite a number of levels!

I would not have thought that the rooster would be in danger!............drowning a rooster by a hen.........oh my! not nice at all! what did that bad rooster do to her?
then you say-----it took awhile for her to get used to him.............geesh -------that seems like a big understatement.........and him to get "used to" her not trying to drown him?????
oh my these birds sure have some spunk!

if there is cocci in my soil ........and my hens are okay................does that mean they are immune or??????? just lucky.........?

Rooster stud service.... Too bad. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. *or the new version! You can send a boy to college, but you can't make him think. (Slaps knee...):gig

My poor rooster danced for her. My silkie is a pistol, she doesn't take anything from anyone! She was raised with my mean silver laced wyandottes and she was the boss. She is very spunky and a great momma!
