I've seen this product recommended for insulation in chicken coops before. http://www.farmtek.com/farm/supplie...t_heating-ft_tekfoil_insulation;pg101382.html

I've never tried it, though. Sometimes I see sheets of used rigid insulation on Craigslist for cheap. As long as you cover it so the chickens don't snack on it, that should work well.

Oh, and Stake, I'm glad you're having fun with sausage. Now I'm hungry for wontons.

Forgot to add, I was toying around the idea of using cheap mylar emergency blankets for insulation, but, you'd need to hang something else over top on them to keep the birds from pecking at them,,,,

Its not that big of an indoor space...................this is making me wonder about winter! hope they find things to do to occupy themselves that are not problematic!

I have a variety of food options with different locations so they wont fight over sharing one bowl.

not mine (except for the broody)...they were all outside in the pen at 6:00a waiting to be left out. As usual they ran up the hill and waited for their morning scratch...then broke into two groups..and sat under the bushes....

Must confess..
Those chicks that hubby is suppose to bring home on Friday,,,I really do not want them....I am not in the mood to mess with a pen of broilers at this time of the year...
They had about 14 hatched as of last night,,,,,need to be out of the building Friday by 8 pm.....I am hoping they find someone else to take them...they are free...

Okay here comes a thread hog! The coop is coming along; got the roof on. I had started it this weekend but had to redo it because it wasn't sturdy enough.

Turned out or be a blessing. I was driving on a major road on Monday and saw some yard sale leftovers with a big "FREE" sign. I pulled over and the gentleman was very helpful and wouldn't take any money; he was happy the items weren't going to the landfill. I got 5/8" thick plywood sheets (twice the thickness of the ones I had been using for a roof!), windows, planks of wood, and what appears to be a wooden railing that is the perfect diameter and shape for a roosting bar or perch. Also a sturdy vintage toolbox and saw. Score! Also found someone with free roofing paper on Craigslist! :weee

You can see in the pics first one side of the roof went up, then the next, with support beams to keep everything secure. I think I did this backwards, but I don't have a miter saw, so I am doing what I can. :D

The one side of my coop (the back) is a door that swings fully open for easy cleaning, and probably venting out in summer. Someone was a bonehead and forgot the cut a hole for the chickens to enter and exit and for a nest box, so I am looking for a chep jigsaw to get the job done.

I know there are areas where the wood does not meet up very well, and these will be sealed to prevent drafts in the winter.

If anyone has any suggestions, hit me up! Thanks for letting me rant!
 
With in the next week or two I will have some 18x 24 squares of Linoleum. I have to get them from my mom shes almost 3 hours away. But when they clear out old displays to make room for new ones and new designs they usually just throw them away! :( I need some for the bottom of a Whelping Box but whatever I have left anyone can come and get them! I told her to get as many as possible. Figured someone on here would use them. They will be all different colors. But for in a coop I am sure the chickens wont mind!

Smart woman. Meat chickens spend all their time eating to keep warm this time of year and are even more annoying than normal.
