For the fermenting questions: Yes, you can ferment in winter. You just need to keep it as warm as possible. I had mine in the basement last winter & just set a heater near it to keep it from freezing. My basement really isn't heated. Buckets of water will freeze down there. The basement door opens at ground level so that made it easier. I currently have my feed on an enclosed porch that we are going to try to heat this winter. As long as the feed stays above about 40F it should still ferment fine. It just takes a little longer to start. Using hot water helps too.

come on guys..everyone keeps talking "goats"...oh my goat this & that...I can't have one and it's NOT fair!!!:rant ....DH is being a hard sell on this one!!:( .....they are so cool and utilitarian!! Still can't talk him into it  ....hahahaha...

I agree, I can't have one either and I am jealous!

About the poop talk, from my own experience with indoor 'fowl' (parrots), occasionally very watery poop is normal. It usually depends on what they eat. If I feed them apples or grapes, 30 minutes later it's liquid doo doo. And pomegranates? Super purple poop! So long as it is temporary and everyone is acting normal, I think they are usually okay. :)

Ooo! Great news! I was able to get roofing paper and shingles from a friend who had it just sitting around in the garage. It will be a shingle show for me today!

Okay question time! I am looking to get 4 chicks next year (don't have any yet). I really am going to be sticking to that number, simply because our yard is small and we couldn't accommodate any more with out disturbing the neighbors. Should I make 2 nest boxes or only one? I am leaning towards two, but please let me know what you guys would suggest! Thanks!

go with 2-------that is what I would recommend-----------I have 4 chickens and you never know when the space would be needed. you don't need 2 ---as in you could get by with one............but whenever people build a coop etc..........it seems they always wish it was a little bigger.
this is just my vote.

I have 8 nest boxes available to about 14 hens and they ALL lay in the ONE box. I your case, I would stick with at least 2, because all that 'No, really, I'm going to stick with my plan of only 4 birds and not be tempted by sweet fluffy chicks or beautiful multi colored eggs, or stunning laced plumage' talk is not fooling me for a second. We've all sung that song before. :D Right Danielle?
