Why do people keep goats? For the milk? I mean they are cute but is there a purpose?

Also, one of my RIRs sneezed so hard today that she fell down. This happened after a feeding frenzy. Is this normal? My birds seem to make weird noises if they eat too quickly.

Mine used to do this really bad with dry food, especially mash. They dive in too fast & get the dust up their nose & it gives them the sneezes. I've had much less of this since switching to fermented feed.

Both my BOs make weird noises when they gobble food....sometimes they run to get a drink too....just pigs imho

..X's 2 on that!!! I was out earlier and gave them some bread..they don't get it often...and the partridge had taken so much, yes they were little pieces, that she had to stop and "work" it down her throat!!!
ep.gif
..I could actually see her moving her neck muscles to get it worked down...crazy birds!!! honestly..what am gonna do if she can't, Chicken Heimlich???? and how in the world would or could THAT work???!!!!
hu.gif
...She of course didn't learn a thing, went right back to hoggin' it down, trying to take it from everyone else!!
Wow, nobody has posted today...so I will....first, no baby chicks yet....and I made my first attempt and pickling peppers....4 pints and most of whats left of my hot peppers....Have a good day all...

Our meaties of choice were the Cornish, so processed before crowing. But all of the meat birds will crow when they hit puberty, some earlier than others, so you have to have a way of dealing with it if you want them to go longer for more size.

Yep, meat birds tend to stink, it is just a fact of life because of the amount of food they process through their systems. The smell can be greatly reduced through giving them room to range during the day on grass or wooded areas (spreading it out and exposing to fresh air and rain greatly reduces the smell) and a lot of folks feed them fermented food, to further reduce the amount of waste. But they are eating, growing and pooping machines, without a doubt. We keep ours on sand in the coop, so I raked their area every other day or sometimes daily, it helped greatly.

Timing is everything when it comes to meaties. You are right to figure warm weather when they are small and cold when it's time to butcher. But if you want a fall run of birds you have to figure the right breed to fit the time frame you want to use. I wouldn't go too late in the fall or you run the risk of inclement weather forcing the birds to hang out in a coop all day when they are full grown.
Awesome info!! thank you!!!..seriously something we are thinking of doing. With the prices of meat at the grocery store...it almost seems like a no-brainer! ..If we don't mind the smell

...Off topic here....
We went to the festival saturday & a vendor was selling "stuff", flea market kinda things and I found a roll of welded wire 3' x 100' ( really small squares),brand new, they wanted $65.00 for it... got them talked down to $50.00!!!! Can't even believe it!!!
Now we can enclose the coop area with something that is small predator safe!!
Didn't think I would be able to do that for quite awhile knowing how crazy expensive that stuff is!! Now i realize 50.00 is a good bit of change, well...it is for me anyway, but we couldn't afford NOT to get it at that price!!! I am sooo stoked!!...just a little good news!!

Here's a couple of links:

This is the one I used for peppers...two pint Jalapenos and two hungarian hots...I only changed the recipe by putting the peppers in the jars raw and then doing the canning thing for 10mins....(I also did not de-seed the Jalapenos... I have had success taking peppers, cut four slits in the peps, putting in a mason jar, then filling with white vinegar and into the fridge....you just need to rinse them off to remove as much of the vinegar as possible....http://www.amandathevirtuouswife.com/2012/07/banana-pepper-rings-canning-tutorial.html

The second is the 'best' place I've found to get cheap chickens....I haven't done business with them yet, but, I was looking at what they call their 'surprise' .....https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...ise-anybody-got-this-before/730#post_11990116

Here's the link to their site.....http://www.cacklehatchery.com/page10.html#happycaclespecial

Hope this helps....

okay people..............can we talk about poop...................as in , you guessed it "chicken poop"

of all the topics............it may not seem like a top of the list one but..........as we all know -----this seems to matter

today I noticed a bit of the "runs" outdoors.

Generally speaking the girls have not had this problem or I have not seen it

They all seem just fine and happy---------acting their normal selves.

When is the "runs" a worry .............and when is it just a random act of nature?

Well, if they are not fenced in the field, and can roam around the property,I just imagine they would jump on anything they like. Cars, tractors, patio furniture...
My dog. Yes she is an American Blackmouth Cur. The best watchdog for chickens ever.

Better known down south as a farm dog. Google them.
