Here are my silkies I just got home with a little bit ago. They are 6 weeks. They are my first silkies. I do have a question, are they big enough to not put marbles in there water? This is the first I've had chicks. I figure they are big enough to not drown in the water, but didn't want to be wrong.

SO CUTE!!!!!
by six weeks my chicks were outside and most surely did not have marbles.
RB:

After about a week of the chooks being real defensive, they finally loosened up a bit and went back to normal behavior today....hope your hawk was just passing through...they are a big PIA....I've had three under 10' and within 20' of the chooks for days...fortunately the roos are alert and they flew off when they couldn't get a clean shot at a chook....find myself behaving like a roo...constantly scanning.....
I wish I could have a rooster :( The one I had and gave away was a BA and he was so sweet and attentive.
And no, not passing through. Most are but there are always some about.

Aaaw, tinychicadees, they are gorgeous!
I am definitely no expert as this is my first time for chicks also, my broody Bantam Black Cochin successfully hatching 5 from 5 Bantam Silkies; my first Silkies also. They are 4 weeks old and in a covered run with mumma. I started them off on a very shallow water dish which needed changing frequently as they kept running through it and now they have progressed to a slightly deeper one (about 8cms). They just wander up and drink from it now and don't get their feet wet :) They also have access to the big-girls water-feeder bottle and again, seem to have worked out they don't want to get their feet wet and just take a drink. Depending on the depth of the water, I think they would be OK at 6 weeks, but as I said, I am no expert.

Can't help myself, I had to share some pictures .. I am so proud of Cilla!

Broody has hatched her first baby & has been moved to the stack cage in the basement. She still has 9 eggs but no pips. I stuffed the other 4 babies that hatched this past week under her & she snuggled them right in. I'll candle her remaining eggs once it gets completely dark plus the eggs in the bator that were due a couple days ago. I'll give her anything else that hatches by about Wed as long as they all fit under her. I still have six 2 1/2 week olds in the brooder & they were running over the 4 littles. I think they will be safer with the broody at this point.

Whoever asked about bringing a broody & babies inside: Personally, do...but only because my coops are not yet set up to accommodate chicks. I intend to have a broody coop by spring & let the mommas keep the babies in there. It will be sectioned off from the main coop only eith wire so everyone can see each other so as to facilitate reintegratipn later.

Marbles in water: I never use them even for banty babies or quail. Chick waterers are not deep enough for a healthy chick to drown in. If a chick drowns in a waterer it was very eeak to begin with. For quail I have found that tissue, toilet paper or cotton works much better than marbles or rocks. Quail WILL drown themselves until they are about a week old. The "stuffing" in the water dish allows them to walk right across the water & not even get wet. They just push it adide with their beaks to drink.

Thanks for all the info. My coop does not have electric, and its been getting pretty cold, I wasn't sure they could handle the temps so right now they are in a cage in my basement, its about 65-70 degrees down in the part they were in. They don't have there feathers yet, so I figured they couldn't handle the cold. If I knew they could they would be in the cage in the coop!

My six week olds were out when it was much warmer. It was getting to 60 at night and it was 70-80 in the day.

Here are two pictures from todays activities. Esther is loving the pine cone I coated with peanut butter and cracked corn................she enjoyed it AFTER she was initially scared to death of it and hid in the coop until it stopped moving .

My two wyandottes are LOVING ......as in totally loving the peat moss area................digging themselves in and lying sideways at time in the sun and dirt! ahhhhh must feel good.
