Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! And offers of chicks haha! Way too soon int he game for them, but yeah next year I'm hoping to have the yard squared away, wood cleaned up to use in building the coop and enough knowledge and confidence to go forward. Oh and I need to convince my wife that this isn't a bad idea :p

My "dream" is to have heritage breeds, particularly Dominiques since I'm a history dork as well. It'd be even better if, someday my son gets into 4H like my wife once was with rabbits. We'll see!

Stake - I'm in Chester Co. as well! Landenberg, very close to the DE and MD state lines.

Thanks for the words of encouragement and support MotorcycleChick :)

FAB:

I'm near Malvern. There's tons of interesting breeds. If you find yourself in my neck of the woods...you are welcome to stop by a see my 'situation'...its an easy way to sell the wife, and since I already made most of the newbie mistakes...I might be able to guide you around a few....

We promise to overwhelm you with options. You can choose white, light brown, medium brown, chocolate brown, blue, sky blue, green, olive green and a few other shades of eggs.
Then we will start in on the breeds. Feathered feet vs: non-feathered. Want frizzled? Barring? Straight colors, or chickens with black, green and orange feathers?
Want six? Build for twelve! Don't want roosters? Yes, you do! Don't want to hatch your own? Yes, you do!

Don't worry. We will help with everything from chicken math to chicken hoarding.

This is soo True! I went through all this, this past summer! She is right! Always build for more and dont think you want a rooster think again. I only wanted 4 I now have 8. I got rid of three roosters outta my first batch. I went and bought another one. I said I didnt want anymore.... I am thinking about getting some more. After this spring I said I didnt want to do the chick thing again. ( I was constantly checking on them and making sure they were okay) I want to hatch my own chicks this spring and rasie them... Instead of buying day or 2 old chicks.....

Its addicting....And you dont think of food as having personality or being loving. But they all are different...The one roo i had liked to snuggle into you neck and go to sleep. My one hen I have now as soon as a sit down near them she jumps up on my lap snuggles her head against my arm and goes to sleep. My other hen if I dont go out with some kinda of treat or food other then their feed she will peck at my feet or jump up and grab my fingers the whole way back to the door and sometimes she will even try to come in after me to try and get her darn treat!

They really are great!

I have Dominique..no extra's, but give a heads up I can hatch some more.

Do female turkey's strut and put on a show.....My one lonely turkey, that I have sworn was a hen this entire time, still looks like a hen to me, but has been seen doing the turkey strut....this is a 5 month old turkey, not a baby.
I have heard this before just never seen it.

Wing, I've never seen a hen strut, just my toms.
I never did either before yesterday,,,,,,time will tell...........this is the one hen from the wishard line that i picked out for breeding, so kind of frustrating, may need to change plans now.....I have had to protect her from brother and hubby,,,,,they see turkey and think food not breeding for next year..

Hi, wasn't sure how to start a new on topic thread so just replied to this.
We're in Northampton County and have a very small backyard flock. Already my husband is planning for expansion next spring.
Our goal is a colorful egg basket (The chickens are pets.) and I'm interested in adding a few (two or three) chocolate egg layers and increasing the colored egg layers we have.
Does anyone know a good source in the area for peeps or are there ever swap meets or chicken sales?
Or do I need to mail order?
