Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Thanks. That does make sense so maybe I'll get brave enough to let tonight be their first night. I was also thinking about having to keep them all in the coop together next week when the minus 0 weather comes in, I was afraid they would get bored & attack each other more. No more new chickens for me ever again in the cold weather. Course I can only have 4 more anyway because of the city regulations.

I love that "Dexter" has a name! Looks like it keeps thing nice and toasty.

I am so behind on post I can't possibly go back and read them all! Hope everyone had a very safe and warm Holiday.

Okay, it's January, and I'm dreaming of baby chickies.... Is Febuary too early to start? That's my plan on when to get the little chirpers. Will anyone have any little peepers around that time? I am looking for day old chicks. As far as breed goes, I want them fat, fairly decent egg layers, and friendly. Not necessarily in that order of importance.

. So excited! And so are my neighbors, my family, little children, my parrots (maybe).

Annie:

My original crew of 6 (day olds)were from the last week in Feb from Pickering Valley feed (that was the first batch they had available)....I had to keep them inside for eight weeks...you will need a brooder...you can start with a laundry basket...but they will out grow that really fast....you will also need a heat lamp....I used an $8 work light from HD and a red heat lamp (for lizards) at 125W make sure the light can handle the watts in the bulb....

I have something hatching every week!
I am looking for Buff Orps, Barred Rocks, really not too particular since this is my first go round and I am chicken ignorant anyways. My main concern is for health and friendly birds, my secondary (or thirdly, but who's counting?) concern is for decent egg laying. I only need four, and I need an "exchange plan" or option in case I get a roo. I don't want one yet and my neighbors say no (obviously!)
Not sure which hen is laying the egg but it's a brown speckled one and inside it always has red hard spots. What is it? Safe to eat or not? I've been tossing them.

[/IMG] anything I can do to stop it from happening? Dietary changes, etc.
I believe it is a blood spot in the egg, and just happens now and then. I get one like once in a while from local egg lady (Shoutout to RosesChicks!). I eat and no bad results, except maybe that I want more eggs. ;)
I am hatching now and will be throughout then. Research breeds and decide from there what you want and I am sure someone can accommodate you! I dont mind chicks in my house, it makes them friendly to have the kids get access to them for several months until its warmer out or even in the garage after a month.
What re you hatching? Please see my notes from above! :D
I really could not believe my eyes when I pulled the mail from the mailbox.... I got a seed catalog !!!
Yay! They've been coming in for me too! Poo to budget cuts this year, can't buy much, particularly with Chickies on the way... Wink wink....

Hi Annie----I am getting excited about getting chicks too! I have been doing some planning and I figured if I got mine around March 1st then they could go outside at 6-8 weeks of age when we no longer go below 40 degrees at night. That's if weather patterns follow the usual trajectory............so who knows.

At pickering valley feed they have a time table of what is coming in......

and I will also be asking folks around here.

If I can get day old or thereabouts from people on here ------that would be my first choice.........so I can support this group.

At pickering I looked over their offerrings and made a wish list of
1. Ameracauna
2. Welsummer
3. Columbian Wyandotte
4. silver gray dorking
5. buff orphington
6. cuckoo maran

the problem is I can only really get 4 .....maybe 5 total.............so its kinda hard thing..............and that is just when I am thinking about it........when I see the baby chicks......it will so much harder.

People on here: do most of the chicks survive when raised indoors ? with a heat lamp in a brooder?

what has been your experience with this?

JJ was the 1 treating her the last couple days since I'm busy at the new place. She soaked her feet again (still black) to try to prevent infection. She is getting duramycin-10, vit/elec powder & brown sugar in her water. She gobbles her crumbles. She is in a box lined fith scraps of an old towel by herself next to the brooder where she can hear the chicks. The heater in the room keeps her toasty. She hobbles but gets around.

Well it's good that she's eating and staying warm! Hopefully she gets better!

I get these sometimes and I researched it once myself. It's just some blood, and it's supposedly safe. I eat eggs like this and I'm still living

My flock is mixed & will lay a rainbow of egg colors. I got 2 barred chicks this last hatch which could be either the barred rock or cuckoo marans coming through from the original flock my ee & oe came from. I usually get a really wide variety of feather color too. If you are looking for brown layers I can't guarantee that. What I can guarantee is a rainbow if colors in eggs & feathers both. All of my birds are plump, remotely friendly & lay pretty well. Most also lay pretty good sized eggs too. I have a buff orp who lays a small egg. Everyone else lays large to extra large. The buff orp's eggs hatch well though. I usually end up with several of her chicks in each hatch. They are always light colored so I can tell which they are too.

it almost feels like seed catalogs come so early just to torture us... makes me want to go get some soil and plant something........what can I plant this early
My mom has a greenhouse & a sun porch. Granny has a Florida room. Both of them start everything inside in those little peat pellet things & then transfer them to little pots or yogurt cups until time to go outside. Window sils work for those without special rooms...lol
