Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hi new here to the site. We live in Bethel Berks County PA. We currently have 2 Buff Orpingtons, and 3 New Hampshire Rocks. All hens.
We are kind of new at this, and are learning every day.
Dealing with the cold weather is a learning experiance and now we are dealing with frost bite combs and frozen water buckets that have a bucket heater in them.
Love the Buff's, so we ordered 10 for free ranging 2 Roos and 8 girls.
Were hoping to get bigger buffs so we can use them for dual purpose.
Let me know if we have our own web site for the PA chicken people?

I was worried once about scabs on a Roos comb, had an avian vet look him over, said the pox would be more of pustules or blisters, could be your boy is getting picked on while he's not feeling quite himself and those are scabs?

I don't think he's getting picked on. I'll try to get a pic. They don't look a LOT like the pox, maybe a mild case. And the wet seems to be very very mild too. castportpony has a thread about pox but those hens have extremely severe cases. I hope his doesn't get like that if that's even what it is. If he does get that bad I'll just cull him for the safety of the flock.

He may not even have pox.

Welcome! I recommend only having one roo for 10 hens, they may fight. You can always eat one if it gets mean. Actually I take that back. They may be fine.

Just popping in to let y'all know I'm still around. I've just been busy & not online as much.

All of my chickens survived the night! They are still locked inside their coop. The wind is nasty and blows right through their run. I'm sure they would survive but I feel better leaving them in for the day. I have some butternut squash leftover from my garden so I gave them some and they have been having a good old time pecking at it.

The kids and I have been doing experiments all day. We did the boiling water, bubbles and now are timing how long water takes to freeze outside. We did 1/2 cup in different types of containers.

I have 4 dozen of eggs so I thought I would offer some to friends and family on Facebook. Everyone wants the brown eggs and no one wants the white. That cracks me up. I guess I will keep the white for us and sell the brown ones when the time comes. lol.
Great to hear!!!

Uggg, about the staying warm... I am afraid I may lose my favriote show Buff Leghorn rooster... We need to switch feeds, the 16% layer feed for some reason don't cut it for my show birds, he's really the only one looking bad, he's skinny, his comb is froze even thoug we put on pratrolium jelly, he's cold, and he looks horriable, We had to put him in a dog cage in the basment, and he's one of the two out of my flock I'm really attached to, his name's Abraham.
