I know! Those baby CCL's are so cute!

I considered leaving the run door open today. Then thought better of it, picturing drenched birds freezing solid if the temp drops too low later. Silly things would stay out there all day in the rain too. The thought of taking a hair dryer to 10 chickens is not one I'm enjoying right now. So, in they all stay today. ^_^
it is pouring here too...blah...makes everything hurt worse...at least it's warmer...that is what I keep telling myself anyway

So I'd planned on going out today and taking all the straw out of the coop and nest boxes, adding it to the compost pile at the bottom of the yard and replacing it with fresh straw. Since I've still got most of a bale to use up before I can justify getting a couple of bales of the Aspen chips I'd rather be using. I put on my hunting boots because they've got great tread, are 1000gram Thinsulate, and are water proof. Threw on my hoodie because it was supposed to be fiftyish today. Stepped off the porch and made my way out the sidewalk to the coop. Stepped off the sidewalk onto the cobblestone walkway down to the coop and about went right on my butt. Solid ice! Apparently the snow that had been hanging around yet melted with the rain and then refroze into a 2" thick slab from the retaining wall on the top side of the yard right down to the bottom retaining wall. I couldn't even make it down to the run door and barely made it to the back of the coop where the nest access door is. I did manage to retrieve an egg. Needless to say the coop cleaning is going to wait till the darn ice berg melts. I just don't understand though! The thermometer on the porch says 45 degrees. WHY is there ICE where there was none earlier when I went out to feed everybody!??? D:

Stupid weather! I'm just glad I had on my good boots and not my Crocs that I usually slip on to go out there or I'd have been on my butt at the bottom of the yard for sure XD

I just lost my quotes, and I am not going back to find them.
Yes, I keep cutting myself on the metal chick feeder. The first time I went to clean it two years ago, I sliced my finger almost down to the bone. I am more careful when I have to use it (I had 3 broodies last year at the same time), but I am still getting nicked. I guess I have a dud. Or I am a dud!

Everyone enjoy the rain, and wet chickens today!

I can be an enabler this year. I always just had barnyard mixes so no one wanted them but tomorrow I'm getting my first pair. I'm so excited! Who wants some buff banty cochins eggs/chicks? ;)

Me! Me! Fluffy butts. Fuzzy feet. And little!

Seriously, those sound adorable. Good luck with breeding. ^_^

This seems to be the worst of my frostbite damage, amazing since a lot of my birds refuse to stay inside.

those 2 hens behind the rooster are a leghorn and a tetra tint both will be 4 this spring,,,they came thru the freeze just fine also.
