The 8'' strip of ground between the sidewalk and curb is going to be flowers this year. The back yard that isn't already perennials is going to be veggies like brussels sprouts, beans, tomatoes, etc. And herbs. And the coop. Which is yet to be built.

More quackers

I love the one staring straight at you in the bottom of the pic!!!

I've got snow out front n mud out back...no green that I see.

BTW I really think Punxsutawney Phil is wrong, have blue birds here, feels kind of early for them.

Agreed!! I see signs of spring also....even seen geese flying north,,course the weather is rather foul in the south...

I agree that Phil is wrong. I have been seeing possums and rabbits all over the place in the last 3wks. I know they do not hibernate, but today's roadside carcass made me smile... not to be sick or anything. The poor dead creature that made me smile was a young skunk! Yes, they hibernate! Of course, the geese and the blue birds and blah, blah, blah... SKUNK! WHOOT!

Okay, back to your less demented programing.

Nice to see the discussion of other (crazy?) people spending the bucks or creative energy at least on chicken surveillance and comfort. If I totaled up the "cost" of the chickens vs. the cash I've spent to make their lives and mine a bit easier, people who don't "get" the chicken thing would have me committed.
One of our best investments actually was a remote weather station... We can see the temp and humidity in the coop from the comfort of our kitchen and adjust accordingly.
We have a 'weather center' also... it has 3 remote sensors and 2 displays... one sensor in broody area, one in main area of coop at 'roost level' and one on back porch for outside temp. One display unit in dining room and one in bedroom.. DH loves techie gadgets, so that was another find for his B-day. Amazon is a wonderful research tool! LOL

When I lived in a small city we had a sidewalk along the one side of the house, and the yard was small, so I made a garden in the 2 feet x15 feet between the sidewalk and house. You would be amazed at how much you can actually grow in a small space.

Here is a white Cubalaya rooster.
He's beautiful!
there's still time to go back
Lol lol. Enabler alert! ;)

Yay! Good luck with the coop! I am ready for spring too. Love those catalogs this time of year... :D

has anyone here used a food dehydrator?

I am thinking of getting one

As I am planning a big veggie garden............I thought I dehydrator might be useful in case the yield is too much at one time.

I know freezing and canning are options too.........

does anyone have experience with dehydrators and have some insider info to share to someone new to this type of thing?

thanks in advance!
I have one & use it to make my dog treats. I dehydrate apples & sweet potatoes for her. I don't use it for much else but I really like it for what I use it for. I do plan on doing some venison jerky in it in the near future. I have tried rehydrating the sweet potatoes but I do want to try that too some time then I'll know if I can do some for us to use should the need arise.

Finally a "nice" day hahaha

So questions.....Are poopy butts normal in the winter? I noticed most of my girls have them? Just little on the fence/worried since two of my girls went all crazy on me and i lost them this winter...They never had them this summer?

On another note guess spring fever or winter borden has set in, in the coop! Two of my girls have nothing better to do then to warm their eggs!

And I finally got the big chicken feeder inside the coop! :)

I have 1 that has poopy butt & I am a tad concerned about her. I was thinking it was because instead of roosting on the bar in the coop, she roosts on the poop board & I thought maybe the poo didn't clear the feathers because of being so close to the poop board. She seems healthy otherwise & I checked her vent & it's not blocked and I am getting eggs from her. Although the eggs are paler, rougher and seem a bit thinner shelled. I have been dosing her with yogurt with some extra oyster shell. The shell now looks a bit thicker. Am I missing something that I should be treating her for? So much to learn!!!
