Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

My plan was to raise coturnix this summer for eggs. I won't have any good layers until next winter when the pullets I hatch this summer start laying. I refuse to eat store eggs (my dad found a guy at work with hens, so if worse comes to worse). So I'm gonna get five or six coturnix hens and close the underneath of my coop into a run. It'll be perfect. A guy at the TSC swaps has any bird that you could think of and he lives right down the road so if you want something he can just go home and get it.

But... now my dad says if we get guineas for the ticks we aren't getting quail because he says " We aren't having chickens, guinea, AND quail. No."

But daaaaaaad.

chippysmom...
Did you have your Dad ask the egg source from work if their eggs were fertile, or the TSC swap guy? It would save you some driving (gas money), especially if the egg source has more white birds to increase your odds for getting white/yellow chicks.

Ohhhhh one more question

how loud are quail?

I would love to have a male and female couple so they can breed.

how loud is their call?

I do understand it is pleasant.............just don't want to alarm any neighbors!
I do not mind the noise from the quail, I kind of like the sounds they make....

the major downside of quail is that they throw and waste a lot of feed ......and they are major poop machines...

as far as eggs for crafts, i never have any left, between what I need to hatch for the ongoing meat and what I hard boil weekly I have never thought about what to do with extra eggs...

okay so last nights traps..............

only yielded one small mouse............dead this am.

However all the traps were triggered except for the big cage one.................

time will tell.............its only the beginning.............I aint stopping till I get that nasty big fellow and then.......

I will continue just in the rare event he has friends.....

cant imagine anyone friending him but ------just in case!

-------------------------

Quail look like fun!

I am getting my new chicks next week and have plans to build a bigger and better coop in April

I also have all kinds of seeds here now and even my seed potatoes have come in the mail

have not build the square foot garden raised beds yet and considering all of this am entertaining a whole new direction to add? Quail..............what am I thinkin!

It is craziness...........yet I am never without a hobby.

I love the look of the quail eggshells too.................in the past I was under the impression that the eggshells are sought after by hobbyists/ artsy folks ..............has anyone found this to be true?

If you want "fancy quail eggs" don't get Bobwhites ~ their eggs are small and plain white.

GOOD evening everyone! How are you all doing?
So, after reading a post on using refrigerated eggs in your bator, I decided to try it.. I had some duck eggs in the frig and added them to the 30 eggs I bought off of Wing. I thought it would be an interesting experiment. What do you think?
I could have thrown in some duck eggs, didn't know you had ducks.....

keep a close eye on them,,,The refrigerated eggs that I did turned to stinkers really quickly.
