Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

they are beautiful and looks like fun!

next week is my turn! not sure which day next week but its very soon!

still have not set up the brooder..........and that is because on family member who does not live with me yet is a frequent visitor still does not know of their pending arrival.

I want her to see the adorable fluff balls as a first impression.......not an empty cage IN the house............

this is my way of minimizing any potential irreversible drama!
hope it works

really, what I need to know is, anybody out there interested in a quad of serama,,,,,! rooster 3 hens, all straight feather, no leg feathering........(Ray, you know the girlfriend wants some of these)

I am not to the mealworm farming stage yet - and no, it's not because I think they are gross. I use them to fish and I bait my own hook with no issues. My new project is sprouting. I had some seeds I bought last year and the year before that I never used to experiment with. I have gourmet beet mix, gourmet been mix and peas sprouting for them right now. I am using the canning jar method. They took longer than they said for them to initially sprout, so I was concerned none would! Today I woke up to a jar full of 1/4 inch pea sprouts. The beans and beets aren't doing as well.

Does anyone else sprout for their chickens? I know some BYCers grow fodder...

I sometimes do fodder trays, but never just sprouts in a jar....

I would eat them myself if I did

How small are serama? I've seen pics and videos, but are the all small? How do they compare to small bantams like japanese or OEGB's?

I was thinking about hatching some quail for a display this fall at a corn maze "barn yard" I help run. I don't want to overwinter them, so I was considering coturnix and sell them all for meat (or whatever) when we are done with them. Another option I was wondering about is seramas. I'll also have other chickens (LF and silkies, maybe cochin bantams). Would seramas be enough "different" than the chickens to be a good substitute for the quail? I think seramas might survive the winter inside the barn, but I know the quail would have a tough go of it.

Still kind of want to hatch quail . . .

Hi all I was wondering if any one has buff orphington hatching eggs for sale?
Looking to buy locally or at least in PA.

Ohhhhh one more question how loud are quail? I would love to have a male and female couple so they can breed. how loud is their call? I do understand it is pleasant.............just don't want to alarm any neighbors!
If you are talking coturnix they are pretty quiet. I have wintered them in the basement directly below my bedroom & was never awakened by them. The little boys sound like lazer zaps from the old video games. For bobwhites, they are a little louder but have a beautiful whistling call of "bob-bobwhite" that I just love. I had 2 pens last summer & they called back & forth to each other.

Prices & pix please? My daughter wants to do chickens for 4-H this year & I'm trying to find something small she can handle easily.
is it possible to sex day old coturnix quail?
Not as day olds, but certain colors (pharoah/wild) sexes eadily by chest colir by a week or so old. All other colors can be sexed easily by call or vent at about 6 weeks old.
