Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Just met fisher, she served as my enabler! She was so nice, even though I was really obnoxious and drove her insane with finding out somewhere to meet!

I told her a dozen. She gave me 15

Thanks again fisher! It was so nice meeting you!

I'll have to tell the girls that their eggs are on the world wide web! LOL

Was great to meet you too! And you weren't obnoxious at all, your Map Quest just wasn't cooperating!

Now that we know that spot works well for both of us it will be easier the next time you want eggs... Not that I would encourage your addiction or anything!

Next time it needs to be warmer and lighter outside so we can sit and chat for a while without freezing... BBrrrrrr!

Hoping your hatch goes well and you end up with plenty of models for your photo shoot!

Quote: Wing... does the farmhouse have internet? If so, then you can set up surveillance and view it over your computer. I got DH a set up for his birthday.... ours is more than what would be needed for just the coop, but we totalled 8 cameras watching house and coop, with a 1 TB DVR to record activity (can be set to record on motion detection). Coop cams are totally entertaining and we can check in over smart phones or any regular computer to see what is going on. He was just checking in to see what the birds were doing when he saw the rat sneaking out of it's hiding spot to snag some scratch seed. Timing is everything, I guess.
And the cameras also have pretty decent night vision.... but if you are setting up the system, spend the money to get the cameras with 650TVL or better resolution or the picture is really not too good.
Also, some home owner's insurance companies offer discounts if you have a surveillance system, though I don't know if they need to be 'monitored' by a professional company to qualify.

your kidding right,,, I should be thankful the place has running water.........let's just say that someday, it will be a work in progress that will never get finished....do you remember pocket doors,,,this place still has them between rooms
Quote: I didn't realize that! I tried a couple of other times to get dorking hatching eggs to add to my flock also...hhmmmm.....

I may break down and get eggs from her also,,,,I really want a white dorking though
so how can I find msladyhawks info so I can pm her?

also how can I find the map of who is located where?

I am in SE PA and don't want to drive too far for chicks.

What if I get a few chicks at Pickering and a few from another source..............can I keep them together since they are all so pure and new?
or is there a health issue

I am only trying to raise 5 chicks!

I really wanted the Columbian Wyandotte and dorkings!

I am playing with feeds/seeds.
On the way back from Quakertown with the turkey hens on Saturday, I stopped at Agway to see if they had any of those mineral salt block holders I am now using as feeders in my pens in the shed. I want to add one to the turkey shed (which is only a temporary winter housing), the goose run and the Ameraucana pen. Well, while there I decided to pick up some new seeds to see if the chooks would eat them.

This is the stuff I picked up all mixed together - Safflower seeds, buckwheat seeds, thistle/nyjer seeds and rooster booster scratch (sunflowers, barley?, corn, popcorn and milo/sorghum).

Here it is the top mix after being mixed with grit and the wild bird food I picked up (more sunflowers, cracked corn, white millet and milo). My 12yr old took the pic - sorry it's blurry.

I can get all of the above ingredients by the pound or cheaper in 50lb bags. I can also get peanuts! I can't get field peas though...
I am using this as a scratch for now. I am just testing what they will and won't eat. Is it weird I was eating it too? The thistle tastes like sunflower seeds. The buckwheat isn't bad, but I can't really define a flavor. The barely? and safflower are both icky. I was curious...

not weird at all, we eat the seeds from the field all summer long, it's a good way to determine when they are ready,.....you are about the 5th person now that says they can not get field peas,,, makes me wonder if they would be worthwhile to grow...,,,,,,,,,,,,,Quote:
awww, duckies.....I have a pekin pen I am dismantling, let me know if you need a few

Can this day be over yet?! I now have three out of four kids sick. My DH's truck let him sit not far from his work. Had to have my mother in law come over to watch the kids so I could go rescue the hubby with the AAA card. Which for some reason is only in my name.... Now we are sitting along the side if the road waiting for a roll back truck and what do they send..... A regular tow truck.. For a full size, extended cab, 4x4 pickup truck! Ugh

Thanks Wingstone, it has been a rough day... On the bright side, the eggs are doing great.. I know I shouldn't be bothering them much yet but, I had to peak. I candled two and can just barely see the start of veins. :)

so... People in Pennsylvania, has anyone had any luck with their ducks laying yet? Every day I go out in the morning and check, and still no egg....?

Ok, WHY I'm arguing with people on the internet I have no idea. I know better.

But, does anybody on here know to Araucanas EVER lay pink or brown eggs?

Not Ameraucanas or EEs but true pure Araucanas.

I've got some nitwit telling me they do and she should know because she "farms them"

Here, I'll give you her blatting word for word

Is there any truth to any of this nonsense?

When you do upgrade at the farm.... we have a DSL phone line which supports the use of the security system for remote access.
I love the pocket doors!.... well..... as long as they work right, I should clarify... when the track gets messed up they are a pain...
And the broody flu is making it hard to collect a decent number of hatching eggs! I won't use the small pullet eggs, so those 4 are out....5 are broody so not laying and 4 are at some stage of molt... so my 'laying flock' is cut by about half.
I like the old fashioned white dorking also, which seems to be hard to find... I guess the flashier feathers do better at shows so they are more common? I just want good, meaty yard birds.

Hi everyone. I have been MIA for a number of months. Took some time off the chicken addiction to work on some art projects and I started fur trapping. Hope everyone is well.

Well done Eli!

This was the image I had of EWeaber in my head...reminiscent of the Metal Show teacher from my high school....

Welcome, Berks here... see below
Quote: yeah I think I have 12 to offer!!

Seriously though I have Crested Cream Legbar Young Roosters available we are north 419 in Berks CO. close to cabelas

Warning... graphic pics below!

So I get a call from DH saying he saw a critter on the web cam in the run under the sand box....

so I grab a couple of rat traps and head out to see what I can do.....

Notice to all furry critters who don't belong here....

MY RAT TRAPS HAVE TEETH!!

Dillon went from goof ball young fellow to totally serious farm dog in 2 seconds flat when I lifted the sandbox and he and Mindy scented the rat. It was over in seconds....

The shrew was in the wrong place at the wrong time....

The brick the rat and shrew are laid out on is 8"x4" x 2" thick...

EEEWWWWWWWWWW

Well everyone, wish us luck! Since we didn't get all that snow, we were able to start our coop construction. Today we cleared about a foot of snowfrom the spot and started the foundation. Hopefully we can finish the foundation tomorrow, the ground is so hard. It's going to be 10 x 12 feet. 10 x 6 will be actual coop and 2 feet up of the ground. The other 10 x 6 will be attached to the back at ground level for feed, straw, and wood shavings storage. The nest boxes will extend from the coop into the shed part. I'm excited to get it built and I'll post pictures either along the way or when it's done
