Now that we know that spot works well for both of us it will be easier the next time you want eggs... Not that I would encourage your addiction or anything!
Next time it needs to be warmer and lighter outside so we can sit and chat for a while without freezing... BBrrrrrr!

On the way back from Quakertown with the turkey hens on Saturday, I stopped at Agway to see if they had any of those mineral salt block holders I am now using as feeders in my pens in the shed. I want to add one to the turkey shed (which is only a temporary winter housing), the goose run and the Ameraucana pen. Well, while there I decided to pick up some new seeds to see if the chooks would eat them.
This is the stuff I picked up all mixed together - Safflower seeds, buckwheat seeds, thistle/nyjer seeds and rooster booster scratch (sunflowers, barley?, corn, popcorn and milo/sorghum).
Here it is the top mix after being mixed with grit and the wild bird food I picked up (more sunflowers, cracked corn, white millet and milo). My 12yr old took the pic - sorry it's blurry.
I can get all of the above ingredients by the pound or cheaper in 50lb bags. I can also get peanuts! I can't get field peas though...
I am using this as a scratch for now. I am just testing what they will and won't eat. Is it weird I was eating it too? The thistle tastes like sunflower seeds. The buckwheat isn't bad, but I can't really define a flavor. The barely? and safflower are both icky. I was curious...
not weird at all, we eat the seeds from the field all summer long, it's a good way to determine when they are ready,.....you are about the 5th person now that says they can not get field peas,,, makes me wonder if they would be worthwhile to grow...,,,,,,,,,,,,,Quote:

Had to have my mother in law come over to watch the kids so I could go rescue the hubby with the AAA card. Which for some reason is only in my name.... I love the pocket doors!.... well..... as long as they work right, I should clarify... when the track gets messed up they are a pain...
And the broody flu is making it hard to collect a decent number of hatching eggs! I won't use the small pullet eggs, so those 4 are out....5 are broody so not laying and 4 are at some stage of molt... so my 'laying flock' is cut by about half.
I like the old fashioned white dorking also, which seems to be hard to find... I guess the flashier feathers do better at shows so they are more common? I just want good, meaty yard birds.
Hi everyone. I have been MIA for a number of months. Took some time off the chicken addiction to work on some art projects and I started fur trapping. Hope everyone is well.
So I get a call from DH saying he saw a critter on the web cam in the run under the sand box....
so I grab a couple of rat traps and head out to see what I can do.....

Dillon went from goof ball young fellow to totally serious farm dog in 2 seconds flat when I lifted the sandbox and he and Mindy scented the rat. It was over in seconds....
The shrew was in the wrong place at the wrong time....
The brick the rat and shrew are laid out on is 8"x4" x 2" thick...
Well everyone, wish us luck! Since we didn't get all that snow, we were able to start our coop construction. Today we cleared about a foot of snowfrom the spot and started the foundation. Hopefully we can finish the foundation tomorrow, the ground is so hard. It's going to be 10 x 12 feet. 10 x 6 will be actual coop and 2 feet up of the ground. The other 10 x 6 will be attached to the back at ground level for feed, straw, and wood shavings storage. The nest boxes will extend from the coop into the shed part. I'm excited to get it built and I'll post pictures either along the way or when it's done
