Zippy sounds like a perfect name. The eggs I fried at 104 degrees are due to hatch on the 15th, I really hope they make it.

Sally, excellent pictures and description! For those who wonder, this is basically how I do it in a mini fridge. Mine had space to install auto turners. My lights are on the bottom, I have a fan blowing up at the top, and water bottles in there to stabilize the temperature.

Wingstone - once or twice a week. Dog, cat, chickens, rabbits. Always need something. Besides, they sell most of what I need in general and its on the way home from work.
Ray, you are a better man than me. I am making myself steer clear of anything remotely close to the TSC....Home Depot, Hershey's Farm Market.... Getting my feed at the mill and trying to Stay AWAY! Must not buy chicks, must not buy chicks.....

You hang out here while trying not to get more chicks?

Seems a bit like holding an AA meeting in a bar, if you ask me.

contact info for longenecker's hatchery.. I do not know if they are NPIP, and be aware that they are not the cheapest, but I always get quality and good service from them.....they supply most of the contract broiler houses in the area, and I am just a little guy but they still take the time to make sure everything is right.

and of course the freedom ranger hatchery, not sure about the chicken side but the website says the duck operation is NPIP...they are out of reinhold pa so for me they are convenient

I do not like to ship if I can avoid it.

A little off subject !!!

does anyone do potatoes above ground in tubs or wire forms,,

we quit planting potatoes 2 years ago, they are just way to much work to dig, thinking about trying a few plants this year in a wire type setting above ground,,,,

anyone have details,,,,should i wait longer to plant since they do not have the ground for temp protection, and I imagine they need more water that way also..

I got my seed potatoes in the mail and am going to grow potatoes in a wire basket I make this year. all the videos look very do-able with good yields...........so stay tune

getting the right amount of water but not too much is my main concern..........

DH, you're right.... I should be in the basement fixing brooders...which I have failed to do ALL winter long..or perhaps I could finish the breeding coop I started last year. As it is...I could really use a turner for my incubator and they are probably on sale for 'Chick Days' at TSC, I should go check it out.... and lets hope I don't walk out with any KFC containers...

Annie------I heard that for chicks ----it is helpful to introduce a small amount of grass and dirt..........like a small handful............when they are big enough.............and prior to their going outside so that they can start to build some immunity to stuff that is in the outside dirt.

I don't know "when they are big enough"

Sally-----if $800 is the comparable commercially available equivalent..........and you are building yours for under $150 for parts.............that is quite a savings! Of course you are not considering your time and labor in your costs..............hopefully yours will work better than the pre-made one............and clearly you are going to be able to handle any mechanical snafus because you are so intimately acquainted with its parts. good job...........and good luck in your first chance to use it! It sure looks like it would hold a ton of eggs...................how many do you estimate?

Re: potatoes------yes I worry that its gonna be a little harder than they show.............but I have watched a lot of you tube videos...................and its worth a try.............
I will post later on my "Real" experience with it.............its all imaginary at this time!

perfect opportunity to try some meaties, you would only need temporary shelter and you could always say that they will not be staying long...

You betcha quite a savings!! Plus Incubators are quite simple in design, its a matter of ventilation, heat equality/maintenance I am fairly sure my 10+ hours fiddling with different sizes on the air ducts and shelving will pay off. That took more time than the build!
