Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Sally-----this may be a dumb question............I don't know that much about incubators..............

I was just wondering why your heat source is at the top..............since heat rises?

the light bulbs are heat source--right? and then fans help to circulate the air.............

does it make any difference if the heat is on the bottom or the top of the unit?

just curious--
I will assume the idea is to take the colder air at the bottom through the back air duct and heat it up top before returning to be forced to the eggs, and perhaps it helps keep the warm air with them longer.... not really sure!

I won't presume to understand Sally's mind, but I think she started by looking at existing cabinet incubators, the most famous of which is the GQF Sportsman series. Those all have the heat, fan and water pan at the top. I can't see that is would make a lot of difference because the fans are sufficiently powerful to ensure that any rising heat is quickly forced all around anyway.

The neat thing about a cabinet incubator vs the tabletop units is that the heating and circulation system are powerful enough to recover the temps and humidity in just a minute or 2 after opening and closing the door. Last night I discovered that the water pan had run dry and it was down to 16% RH. I filled it with hot water and within 5 minutes, the humidity was 70%, with the temp right back where it should be.

I love my cabinet incubator. It's too much and too expensive (to buy and run) for many people, but when you start using more than 2 smaller ones, you really should buy or build a big one. I have to be careful of my brooder capacity now because I could hatch way more than I could find room for.

It's good I have a lot of restraint -- not!
