Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Finally some nice weather here in Pa. The snow is melting and the daffodils are starting to pop up.

I agree, but, I am still snow covered(about 85%) and the drifts are still over 4"....

So I am reading about and learning about coturnix quail.

I EVEN watched a you tube video about how they process quail! Now that is hard to believe for ME!

I see raising quail in my future............but I have several projects already on the brain and need to do one thing at a time!

get chicks
raise chicks
build bigger better coop for all chickens to move to in the fall
build better run
add some better roof to run

raised veggie garden beds
maybe plant a fruit tree?
plant container fruit and veggies on the deck--------expand on my current stock

so if I add quail right now.......its probably NOT a good idea...............

but on the other hand............they seem to eat much the same as the chickens
and they don't take up much space
seems care requirements are low
they have decorative little eggs that are healthier than chicken eggs............

but not just yet................

glad I could share my thinking with this group!

A little off subject !!!

does anyone do potatoes above ground in tubs or wire forms,,

we quit planting potatoes 2 years ago, they are just way to much work to dig, thinking about trying a few plants this year in a wire type setting above ground,,,,

anyone have details,,,,should i wait longer to plant since they do not have the ground for temp protection, and I imagine they need more water that way also..
I did it last year....I put a layer of dirt a ring of potatoes around it then more dirt then another ring the whole way up. I didnt get them in till late and only planted one thing of them. And all I got were baby potatoes about the size of a quarter or 50 cent piece.... So it kinda didnt work...I want to do it again this year but i think i am only going to put dirt in the bottom and then plant....Once they grow through more dirt on them till it get killed so that its kinda the samething as mounding the dirt around them as they grow....

There are a bunch of different ways to do it...So I am just going to keep playing with them over the years...and I think I am going to build another one so I have 2 or 3 this year!

Anyone interested in 2 geese? Chinese/Toulouse mix. Not sure of gender. Located in Lebanon. Will post pictures later today.
Eli message me prices I have an elderly couple that lost theirs with that early pond freeze to coyotes I would love to give her some back if I can afford them

Blarney, I am scared to give her eggs, she is our one eyed brahma gal, she had got stuck in the egg and lost her eye :( she can see but I dont trust her not to step on her babes or am I to fretful with this? I would have to move her to the big shed to raise them and again I would worry about her finding food and water ok. She isnt blind but she does act dumb at times??????????

I would love to let her try but scared to give her any $ eggs, I dont have anything else but the CCL roo over BR hens eggs and I have orders for those right now
hmm.png
hmmmmm but perhaps the polish under the CCL roos!!!! its perfect.....

Let me ask all broody mommas who let their broods brood..... she has been broody for over 2 weeks, its it pushing giving her eggs to start now? or should I just break her in a different coop??? I dont want to hurt her as she has been in that position way long now.

My Aunt always has a couple of quail at her place. Treats them just like chickens and they live for years for her.

I've got two little Bobwhite roosters right now. They're adorable. I keep them separate from the chickens simply because I let the chickens come and go and the quail won't come back if they get out I'm afraid. I feed them the same fermented feed as the chickens. I do have to get a couple of hens for them though if I'm not going to send them to my Aunts this spring as they keep doing nasty things to each other. Silly little things. They make the most adorable noises and start doing a little "feedme dance" when ever I throw bread or cookies or anything out for the chickens. So I always give them a couple pieces of it as well. They'll move back when I open the door and then advance veeeeeeery slowly on what ever I've thrown in for them with their little heads moving down low and back and forth like little feathery snakes. Then they start nomming away on it once they're sure it's safe making little giggling noises to each other.

Now that I think about it, they sort of sound exactly like Guinea Pigs...

I think out loud quite often also, it gets better answers......Quail take a little bit of thinking outside the box,,,,they can be quite wasteful of feed and get real stinky if not cleaned on a regular schedule, but other than that I love quail, I have in the past thought about selling out of chickens and going with just quail

how about moving her and giving her a couple of fake eggs, you could always move her back quickly if this doesn't work

Quote: you are lucky, the only time I had bob white they turned into little monsters that drew blood every chance they got..

just to add, I have solved my problem with the quail wasting feed,,,each cage now has a pan about the size of a dishpan, they still fling things but the sides of the pan catch it,,,,,they learned quickly to hop into the pan to eat..
