our progress yesterday. Coop floor is in and all the walls for the shed are up :) I also forgot to tell you guys, we picked up the last of our chicks on Sunday, 4 wyandottes (one partridge, one BLR, one splash, and one blue). We finally finished our flock lol. That brings us to 4 PRs, 4 EEs, 2 Marans, and 4 wyandottes. That's our starter flock and I'm hoping for a very colorful egg basket lol
Awesome work!
And I thought I was the only one who noticed this... Huge Smorgasborg, with very unique country store in basement, across parking lot is a HUGE supermarket with the best donuts you will EVER encounter. Next door is a 'Goods' with all kinds of stuff and within a mile is 'Shirks' animal health, carrying just about any meds you will need for any of your livestock. Well worth the trip. Never tried the donuts... Also never been in the store for fear of wanting to buy just everything! Ha! of course. I was going to make a joke about 'Turduckin', but since yer new.... lots of people raise their ducks with chickens, the ducks tend to be a bit messy, they get water everywhere. I think with this group, that will be NO problem.
Agreed!
and news of the morning.... Mindy and Dillon.... aka 'the Dynamic Duo' were at it again first thing this morning.... current score.... Dynamic Duo 1, Opossum stupid enough to roam into the zone.... 0!! Mindy and Dillon each got a Scooby snack this morning and a few extra belly rubs for sure!
Yay cheap security!
This is unbelievable! I WANT one!! or TWO.... Here are my 'tandom broodies', Popcorn, my tried and true best girl is in the front there, she's brooding with a hatch mate, they also both have 'Silkie' genes...I think it helps if they are the same breed to tandom hatch. My thoughts on broodiness is that it's a bit like the plague. Once one of them starts brooding, they ALL get in the game. One of the reasons I move my broody Mommas out of the main coop, so I don't lose out too much on egg production.
That's adorable!
Fish go down my shirt. I can tell you, I know what it feels like to be tickled by a fish. Longer trips with colder temps go in my bra. I never would have thought of using zip ties. Thank you! Feed bags in the garden will work! Thanks for that too!!
Lol fish in the "spice rack" as I call it.
5 little chicks out of the incubator. :weee I see a few more pipped . . . :fl
Pics!!!

Hello, I am trying to get some information from someone who has experience with leg banding their birds. In getting to the point where I have to many birds to know who is who just by sight alone. So I order to keep track for breeding purposes I am wanting to leg band them for parentage and also age etc book keeping purposes. I found leg bands sold in packs of 25 numbered accordingly up to 100. I mainly have Cochins and brahmas and was looking at the 3/4 inch bands, but do also have some wyandottes, barnevelders, ameraucana, and marans. Being they lack the leg feathering and size would the same size for them or should I buy a 25 pack or a smaller size for them? Also with the heavily feathered legged breeds how do you put the leg band on? Do you pluck the feathers or just put it on top over the leg feathers. Thank you for your help. It's my first time buying them so some knowledge would be thankful:) here is a link to the type I was looking at.

This is where I buy leg bands. I'll try to remember to check which sizes I get, but IIRC, I use the size 9 even for feather legged faverolles.. (Each number represents 1/* incl of diameter.) I've just put them over top of the leg feathers. You might need the bigger bands for cochins since they seem to have such heavy leg feathers. It's often recommended that you put a dot of glue on the inside where the band overlaps, which I've never done since I'm a procrastinator. I have had the numbered bands come off the birds legs occasionally, and think the glue is a good idea.

Cutler Supply also has colored spiral bands that are nice for keeping track of more general categories, like year of hatch, or egg color, but are not numbered.

One week, one day, and 12 +? hours until I get my first turkey poults!

And whoever said that people don't know how big they get, there is a reason for that. No one is telling us! I have searched, and I have asked. I know a wild turkey tom gets to about 4'. I am in the dark about the other turkeys.
I might have a seven foot turkey, and think it is normal.

What kind did you get? Are they pets or dinner? One year, we got broad breasted bronze in early May, and our Thanksgiving bird dressed out at 44#. I bet he weighed more than 60# live.

oh thank you so much for the info!! I think I am going to get two sizes of a few colors because of some having alot of leg feathering. Never heard of cutlers either they have much better prices than meyer too. Thanks again!

Hello!!

Does anyone know somewhere local I could obtain some "battery" hens? I'd like to rescue some but am not sure where to get them. I know there are a few auctions around, Middleburg, Roots... but I don't know if the local producers send the spent hens to these or directly to slaughter. I have no idea how to appraoch them directly. I know they aren't always open to working with "rescuers". Anyone have local experience with this?

Thanks!!!!

They do give you a carrier, but I always have to put a leather jacket around the box. My chicks are real biker chicks. Unfortuntely, DH doesn't believe in riding slow. So far, all the chicks have done well with their motorcycle ride home.
How did they let you get 4? Mine requires you get at least 6 at a time.
They split the 6 because the other 2 were bantams. I had to put them in with the other 4 to keep warm on the trip. Don't ask how I keep tropical fish warm on the motorcycle.

If you get 8 they will split them, 4 to a box... Some may allow lower #s if they are low on chicks and they are trying to finish off a bin.... if there are only 4 left they would most likely sell them (depends on age of chicks though and if they are getting more shipped or not)
It makes sense. :) Sorry i haven't PM'd you back MC. I will tomorrow probably. It takes forever to type on this darn iPod. I just candled all 15. One definite clear and two porous, undecideds. If I have 13 hatch out of 15, it will literally be a flashback. I'm hatching on the anniversary of my very first hatch ever that made me a chicken owner, and I hatched 13 out of 15 eggs. :) So that'd be the coolest if it works out that way but you never know. :) All of Gracie's eggs were fertile by the way fisher. I checked again last night because I thought it was only 3 but actually all of them are growing. :) Here's a pic: I edited a little so you could see it on the camera. To the naked eye, it's much more detailed and awesome.
That is so cool!! DH will be tickled... he loves the Gracie babies with the puffy heads...
I'm so excited!
And you may have my two female Bobs if you want them.
There's an ad on CL that says "taking all unwanted quail" if you can't find anyone.

I at one time worked for a chicken hauler putting in pullets and taking out spent birds. They all went to slaughter. There is a trucking company in mount joy that hauls. They may be able to hook you up with some if you approach them nicely.
