so far so good! She is sleeping on them LOL
Looks great! Good luck! (did you mark her eggs? and can the other hens get to where she is nested?)

Hello!!

Does anyone know somewhere local I could obtain some "battery" hens? I'd like to rescue some but am not sure where to get them. I know there are a few auctions around, Middleburg, Roots... but I don't know if the local producers send the spent hens to these or directly to slaughter. I have no idea how to appraoch them directly. I know they aren't always open to working with "rescuers". Anyone have local experience with this?

Thanks!!!!
Contact your local SPCA... they probably get 'rescued' and abandoned chickens on a rather regular basis and may put you on a list of folks willing to take them. Even if they don't have chickens they would most likely know who in the area has been involved in chicken rescue in the past.

Quote: RP, BR, BBW and BBB.
do you have the space to seperate those breeds when young, I always find that the broad breasted grow so much faster that the little guys end up getting hurt and get very little time at the feeder...

they will also need to be processed sooner or you will end up with 50 pound turkey,,,with all that aside, the broad breasted have such a great personality that it seems wrong to process.
Yes, they will be separate. I was going to begin with dinner for this year (BBW) and BR for reproducing future dinners (and selling some poults to deflect feed costs). The BBW are coming before the BW, so I will be either choosing a BBW and BBB or two BBW. I think I may as well try both at the same time. BR will be coming next month. IDK when yet.
I am going to do my best to not get attached. I am able to eat my own chickens now, and I killed the first one. YOU may get a visit from me come September or October though. If I can, I will bring others that need your experience. The car is going to smell so good.

Quote: Oh my!! I have only dealt with a bird that big once. It was already processed.
A huge reason for raising turkeys is that they are hard to find when I want one, and they are all so small.

I guess I need to find a new place to store them. I had just thrown 30 some away last year when I was told you wanted them. I don't dare toss them again!

Maybe I will find something to do with them.
Sure, keep me in mind ^^ There is a whole world of things to do with them, I wanna make aprons for our processing days! easy to hose clean lol Though no pockets.

I would absolutely be up for a January or February get together in 2015 (on any Friday or Saturday because I am off those days for sure) but I would also be up for a meet anytime till mid May this year. After mid-May our weekend schedules are tied up till mid October.... we would love to do either... or even better would be both!
