People's lack of exposure to reality is actually sort of sad... it is amazing how far people are disconnected from food... their only understanding of it is what they read on the label at a store.
It is amazing how many times I have had to explain that different breeds can lay different colors...and even that there are different breeds of chickens!  And we live in a relatively rural area of farming country!

it is amazing isn't it? A guy my husband works with actually argued with him over ameraucanas/easter eggers that there's no way any need of chicken lays blue/green eggs and if they do is something you feed them. All chicken eggs are white. *Rolls eyes*

WARNING....do not go to your local TSC without the guidance of another responsible adult.
On Saturday I stopped at TSC for shavings.  Of course I walked by the chicks just to look.  They had the same old thing with a bin of bantam silkies marked at 50% off. Happily I left with just my bag of shavings.
Sunday was such a miserable day...rain, sleet and followed by snow.  Nothing to do but hang out inside and think.  Forward to today.  I have the day off and needed to go to the store.  Of course TSC was on the way so I decided to stop just to look (ok, so I'm lying) the bin of silkies were still there at 50% off.  I did a quick head count and guesstimated 30+.  I found the sales clerk,  luckily the one working was one of the nicer ones at this store.  I offered her 50 cents a piece for the silkies and that I would take them all    It took her about 3 seconds to say ok.  I left there with 38 silkies and one clean/yellow leg chick.
Now yes I do have a plan and lets just say that their loss is my gain  :weee
So, it is possible to barter at a chain store.

Great score!   But.... what in the heck are you going to do with 30+ broody machines?  LOL

So this is where subtraction plays a part in 'chicken math' about 1/2 of those silkies will be roos, so technically she's only adding about 19 birds to her flock.

and by the way, my lunch today is quite tasty and cheap

a piece of round steak that I got on yellow tag yesterday for $1.25, and a couple of dippy eggs......yummy....

never get tired of eating eggs

Haha, dippy eggs! No hiding where you are from ¡

actually, I am a half season transplant,,, spent winters in lancaster county and summers with my grandmother in those backwoods of perry county,   let the jokes fly

Hey, we have dippy eggs here in Ohio too...lmao

No dippy eggs here. We call em over easy.

And SS...I believe I've lucked into one of your turkey eggs which are developing quite nicely. So Thank You!

Chicken math is a horrible thing. Hopefully these chicks wont stick around long enough to see how many are roos. I may play eenie, meenie, minie moe and hope to keep a few girls
