Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Never underestimate the power of a broody hen! When she decides she's ready, let her have eggs to sit on, I think you'll be surprised at how reliable a "heating unit" she is, especially if she's done it before.

But waiting on the urges of a hen often doesn't fit our schedule, hence we use incubators. I hate to suggest throwing away newly purchased thermostat, but I'd suggest you search Amazon for STC-1000, and this site too. It is a few dollars more than what you bought, but is much more accurate with the temps. I love the remote sensor that you can move to where ever you want the temps recorded from. Near the eggs, of course, but you can move it where you wish without a redesign.

I love my Sally, she is the best momma and broody. She is the only silkie that went broody :(. Unfortunately she only hatched out roosters lol.3 sets of chicken eggs and one set of guinea eggs (didn't sex the guineas, sold them young) The last set of eggs were silkies and only 2 hatched, one died overnight (it was looked like suffocated) the silkie that survived didn't make it through this winter. :( The -35 degrees got her :(

I did order the STC-1000 last night. It said shipping will be a month :( sigh. At least I watched the thermometer and checked to see how well it held heat and when the heat when on and off before trying to hatch out eggs. I am hoping this will help me incubate some eggs. I think I need more silkies like Sally. My other 2 silkies have no interest in being broody lol

This is the scene I came home to tonight...

4 chooks outside of the crate, one in. I think the inmates are running the asylum now.

Can you spot the parrot in the background?

I hate to do this to you after you just ordered one: http://www.amazon.com/Elitech-All-P...=UTF8&qid=1397214909&sr=8-1&keywords=stc-1000

Fulfilled by Amazon, so not waiting for a month for the boat from China, LOL.

I was looking at that one but it wasn't in Fahrenheit. That's why I ordered the other one. I diidn't want to try to convert temperatures. It's worth the wait if I can tell the temperatures lol.

Is there anyone near me that would be willing to incubate some eggs for me in exchange for hatching eggs? I have Black Copper Marans, Olive Eggers, Mottled Houdans, Anconas, Cochins and 2 kinds of ducks: Rouen and Blue Swedish.

I am actually near Saegertown. Have to change on my avatar.

I just started collecting fertile eggs.

Awe wish you were closer.....I have been looking for BCMs

It makes me feel like a scientist to speak in Celsius and grams, but that's just me. Maybe I should buy a white lab coat to wear in the incubator room, LOL.
