Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I have to meet MC in an hour and I still can not keep both eyes open, good thing that chicken people understand the lack of sleep thing.

The lilac conversation,,, please forgive me,,, I have killed many plants especially the neighbors lilac bushes,,,you see, I have an allergy to them and the neighbor insist on planting them under my kitchen window...I have no idea why she can not et a lilac bush to grow:D

Is it Friday yet?? 3 hours of sleep a day is just not cutting it..

I cannot wait to get my ducks into the coop and out of my basement, they stink!!  I bought them from someone about 2 weeks ago, they were already 5 weeks old then.  I wanted to quarantine them for at least 2 weeks just to be sure they weren't sick.  I will never complain about chickens in the brooder again, ducks are horrible!!  But I love to hear them quacking down there, can't wait to see them waddling around outside :)

Question:  Do you quarantine even if you know where the animals are from?  Like if you know the person takes good care of their animals and everything's clean and none of their animals are sick, would you still quarantine?

Yes, you should still quarantine. I'm not saying i always do. I'm saying you should.

For those pruning lilacs. They should be pruned after flowering, being careful not to cut off new growth. Only prune the parts that have just flowered. This is easiest to do just after the flowers die. Next year's flowers are already developing at the end of the new growth just starting. Keeping the suckers cut back will also force growth into the mother plant. Removing the suckers will not hurt the plant.

Good advice Thanks! I pruned some of mine back last year since it's shaped like a V and one side is way bigger than the other :/ I hope I didn't destroy too many of this spring'spring 's blooms

I find pruning to be the most difficult part in trees and bushes. Different species grow different ways and have different requirements. It also depends on your goals. Timing is often very important.
generally it won't kill a plant, just reduce its flowering/ fruiting for a season or two. Sometimes it is needed to control growth or shape.
Same is true of things like tomatoes : to remove suckers or not. I've seen both methods recommended. It depends on what you want from the plant.
I tend toward as little work as possible, but prime my fruit trees hard. They are only 4 years old and haven't produced much. I'm just trying to get them to a manageable size and a shape allowing light and air to as much of the plant as possible. Beautifully manicured is not my goal. Sustainability is.
My lilacs are too shaded to flower. They are several generations old. They have been moved several times (suckered) over the last century or so (my grandmother died in 63 and they came from her mother). They have been shared with others as well. I guess I need to go work on them this week. Huh?

Thanks guys for reminding mr what's important, even if you didn't mean to.

Chicken related:
I've got 8 of these, two and three weeks this weekend. Mother was a silkie mix that for in my Swedish flower hen pen. I couldn't tell the eggs apart. There may be one or two ee/Orpington in there. May even be a pure SFH, I'm not sure. If anyone on here wants them, you may have them. I have them on craigslist super cheap, but I won't charge you if you are a member here. I just have no real use for them.

Lisa:

Just stop by with a bucket...might be able to send you home with a couple of chicks too.......

you have got all kinds of stuff at your place!

I wish I could have chicks............not at this time..............however in 2 weeks I am building a bigger coop for my current gals and making it big enough to accommodate new chickens in the future.

when I read your post, stake, it seemed to me like you just acquired a whole lot of roosters.......ccl ones...........................wondering how all those boys are gonna impact your existing chickens?

Lisa:

Most of what I have will be going somewhere else...I only intend to keep one CCL boy as a backup to the main...they are free to anyone who wants one...
