The original lilacs, often found around old houses, have been greatly improved over the years. There are even some varieties that will bloom a second time in later summer (they might say they bloom all summer like roses, but that's an exaggeration). The variety I've used the most is called "Miss Kim". It's "dwarf", but I've seen them taller than 6 ft over time. What I like about them is they are absolutely covered with blooms and the fragrance is pure lilac and seems much stronger and longer lasting. They are not new and so pretty cheap at the discount garden centers. BTW, if you go to Shady Maple, allow time to explore some of the local nurseries and greenhouses. Quality is higher and prices much lower than other places. I think it's all the local competition or something.

One of my favorites out that way is Connestoga nursery, do you know the names of any others?....I'm always in the mood to shop landscape. Hey, and these new varieties of lilac, any that avoid powdery mildew?

I'm in love with the older varieties and has to be the light purple. I don't care for the scent or the other colors as much. Still love them though :) My mom has one that i got her a couple years ago for mothers day that's a newer type. It's very pretty and blooms for a long time. everyone always mentions shady Maple. What is it and where at lol. I think I may have to take a road trip to check it out one of these days lol

Shady Maple is a buffet restaurant....but there are a whole lot of other businesses located there...very Amish....my sister always goes there to buy Easter Ham....one funny thing(and it got mentioned on a morning TV show) is that Shady Maple offers a 10% discount for anyone who has had gastric bypass surgery....I personally haven't been there yet....but plan to soon.....

Oh yes, forgot to mention, Miss Kim is highly resistant to PM, that's why I selected that variety in the first place, but after enjoying it for so many years, I completely forgot about the mildew issues of the other varieties. I think that may be why it performs so well compared to others varieties, if we didn't have constant PM problems, any variety would probably do great.

Conestoga is the one I usually buy nursery stock from. When you are there, go another mile or 2 north and you'll find a greenhouse with great selection and, especially when the season is winding down, great prices. I bought many different varieties of herbs there, 2 for $1. Late June and early July are the times to get perennials cheap. All the heat sensitive ones look awful, so you can see which ones perform well under extreme conditions. Survival of the fittest in action!

There are a number of nurseries south of Shady Maple also. Just drive around a bit and look for signs -- sort of like garage sales for horticulturists,

This is sort of enabling behavior, is it not? But for food instead of poultry.

Oh well, it's what we do here.
 
I cannot wait to get my ducks into the coop and out of my basement, they stink!! I bought them from someone about 2 weeks ago, they were already 5 weeks old then. I wanted to quarantine them for at least 2 weeks just to be sure they weren't sick. I will never complain about chickens in the brooder again, ducks are horrible!! But I love to hear them quacking down there, can't wait to see them waddling around outside :)

Question: Do you quarantine even if you know where the animals are from? Like if you know the person takes good care of their animals and everything's clean and none of their animals are sick, would you still quarantine?
