My marans was off the nest this evening when I went to check on everyone. Don't know if she is committed to being broody.

I went to the TSC and look what followed me home. A box full of Black Australorps. My TSC guy told me that they will be getting more chicks this week and everything will be half price on Sunday. Sunday is the last day for chicks. I got these guys half price. They had all chicks and ducks $2.39 or some odd number like that (it was under $2.50) where half off. Score!!

I love blue birds. None of my birds ended up with frostbite on the wattles, just the 2 big combed roos on the points of the combs. Where did you get your birds/eggs?

The Bredas belong to a close friend. We are ex-tropical fish breeders (well he still has some, that's how he makes the money to pay for his chicken addiction). Last summer he drove out to H&H and bought 5 young Bredas. 2 died, but his remaining trio is doing very well. I should ask him for some pics of the older ones. He also has some Barred Rock hens and I hatched some of those to test my incubator. They are turning out pretty nice too, with the males showing blue barring (splash roo over barred hens = blue sex-links). I'll try to take some pics of those too. I rather like the mixed breed chickens we have and these are so different looking than the main ones, with the blue and blue cuckoo patterns and some feathers on their feet. I'm trying to talk him into creating BBS Barred Bredas, just to be the only ones that have them.

I've come to the conclusion that the coop will not be done by this weekend so I spent a couple hours and threw this together out of some scrap pieces today in the garage. I was starting to feel bad for them being in the two large dog crates like they didn't have enough room to move. I can spring clean my bedroom too since they're out in the garage now and get rid of all that dust! Think they'll be ok in here until 8 weeks old? There's 17 of them and the dimensions are 4' X 6' and 3' tall. I still need to build them a couple roosts but I'll do that tomorrow. I'm beat lol.

A woman who knows how to use power tools. Fantastic.

This is very similar to what I built for some of the older chicks at the farm, but I made mine 4x8 and only 2 ft tall. The shortness was to make it easy to step into, but it's also a lot easier for them to fly out of.

How many chicks in there?

lol! I actually get in trouble when I do too much work while hubby's at work. He says I'm taking away his manhood but I know he lives that I can handle things

there are 17 in there. 15 are LF and 2 are bantam

Sally Sunshine has some very nice links on fermented feed with videos of the "how to" included.

You can ferment pretty much any type of feed. It helps increase usable protein in the feed, strengthens egg shells, helps prevent wasted feed, reduces the amount of feed the birds have to eat to stay healthy, & boosts egg production. Lots of benefits to fermenting.

Awesome little one's !! I have not a clue on their sex, but they are very cute!!
