Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

See! I try and re-purpose and reuse anything I can find. The coup I'm building is made out of old dogeared picket fence sections that I removed from a customer's house and the nesting boxes are in flower pots on shelves inside of a thrown away solid wood bookshelf.
My newest coop is built almost entirely from a deck my husband tore down for a customer. It is one HEAVY coop! As irony would have it, they live in a development next door to a woman that moved in and brought around 100 chickens, ducks and turkeys with her. The neighborhood association( including the lady my hunny worked for) is trying to force her or the poultry OUT.( I may or may not have secretly met and bought from her). Knowing how they feel about chickens I asked DH if he admitted we used their deck to build a coop. He says no way, but I would so love to see her face if he did!

I am new to this all (breeding genetics) but I amtrying to learn. My brahmas are the BIG ones. I am also curious about this leaking through thing? Due to the genetics?
I am super interested in genetics, did read through and do some research. . . .

. . . .which reminds me, anyone ever see the one site online to order the Chickens Genetics book. It looks like its from another country . . . .but is it. . . . .leary of scams. If you get time, check it out. I really want it, but . . .there is that funny feeling it might be a scam.

I did read through those recent posts on the rain. We realy didnt get anything big, most of it most have past my area by.

The leakage that you are seeing is because of this:

The undercolor on the Brahma should be a dark gray color. The darker, the better. BUT, that dark color can come at a price. The darker the color of the underfluff, the more leakage you are likely to see come through on the top feathers (in your birds' case, the Buff color and White color). It is not desirable in show birds and will usually on have more of that dark leakage as the bird ages.

But, if you like the color coming through, by all means breed for the fun! Just know that it is something that isn't generally bred for. Have you posted on the Brahma thread yet to see what they say over there? It's in the Breeds and Genetics section.

Excellent! I have bits and pieces from different jobs that I'm working together with things I pick up as leftovers all around.

My nesting box is actually an old cabinet that had 2 shelves divided into 3 sections each. Much like patrick, I put 1x4 (or whatever the pieces off pallets are) on the front. Fill each box with shavings...and often find 2 girls in each box laying at the same time. Since either it or my wall isn't flush, I put some more boards across the top of the back, so that the girls can climb up there...and not fall behind it.

Ok...back to the quail question...I'm gonna snag my way on to it! Do you keep the quail locked up full time, or do you let them free range? Would they be ok in with large fowl? My sebrights which are about the size of a pigeon are fine mixing with my large fowl, and even the ducks.

Patrick, I might just hire you to come build me some coops...LOL...have plenty of room in the coop for more chickens....but need to get some of the boys out of there!

i have a few brahma's, dan powell lines, were suppose to the the buff laced but what i had hatch out from eggs that i bought, turned out to be one buff laced, not a good marked one, two pure whites , one white with a cream coating, and a blue gold lace, bought more eggs, again one that looks like a cream coating, one buff laced and a gold lace, i never liked a pure white animal of any sort but i have to admit, these two pure white hens are just down right gorgeous.
theres a genetic "book" on rare breeds auction that you down load, i thought about it but don't have something to back it up once i download it.
