I'm sorry for your damage. We lost 3 chickens yesterday, I can't say it was due to the weather, but it's still very discouraging to have an animal die under your care, and 3 in one day is worse. I'm hoping that is all, if more chicks die today I'm not sure what I'll do.
And I had a newly hatched chick drown this week. Still kicking myself over that one too.
I did have some fun giving the chicks a chopped up hard boiled egg. Some figured it out and the others saw it and much activity ensued.
Sorry to hear about the losses, makes a rough few days for you... hoping it starts looking up soon for you!
Anyone hear fromm Cc yet, he is most likely still cleaning up mud..
Glad to here no serious damage was done by the storm, I had to go the long way around for a day and went thru lots of straw trying to keep everyone dry, but considering what they got in other states, we did good.
I have a processing question....
I do not know where everyone is getting my number at, but we are getting regular calls to process for people..( not people on here ). Apparently there's more and more people raising their own meat , then realizing that they can not finish the job......just wondering what a good price would be to process, I hate the packaging part all, would it be reasonable to ask them to bring coolers that I could just put them in ice water and they finish the job....
Not complaining, word of mouth is the best kind of advertising, we now have more egg customers than eggs from word of mouth, ,
Word of mouth can be a double edged sword sometimes... I know it is more good than bad, but sure can make it rough to find the resources to fill the requests sometimes! You can set up a sliding price scale....
something like $2.50 per bird, plucked, gutted and returned on ice in cooler (like you stated) with liver, heart, gizzards and neck packed in gallon bag separate if wanted
........................$3 per bird if they want them shrink wrapped as whole roasters
........................$3.50 per bird cut up and returned in gallon bags for customer to break down and pack
........................$4.00 per bird cut up and vacuum packed/shrink wrapped in serving packs (quantities based on customer
written preferences)
The prices are just guidelines, I know it becomes tedious to cut apart birds, and shrink wrapping isn't cheap and is a pain sometimes
You can write up an order form with all of the options listed, including other fees such as if you pick up or deliver, cost of keeping a bird for a few days before processing if the owners can't deliver the day before butchering...
Having a standard form will allow you to just hand it out when anyone asks you questions about your process and fees and they can take it home and decide what they want.
Having a standard form will also eliminate the 'I thought it would be packed as such and such...' type comments... it will be clear and in writing
