Sorry the weather was rough there :( I hope the cleanup doesn't take too long and they get the bridge fixed soon.

Sorry you have the miserable clean up to get done,, but glad it wasn't worse for you... we didn't have trouble here other than a few branches, which aren't a big deal, but then again an elevation of 1900+ feet on the top of the ridge kinda puts me out of the flood plain.  Now high winds and lightening....

I'm right there with you, about the same elevation. It seems we're always collecting branches out of the yard. But we have that nasty clay soil and our yard is flat so we have soggy spots that'll take forever to soak in. I was hoping to try out the riding mower my parents got me for my birthday lol. Apparently they didn't like the fact that I was using a push mower last year to mow an acre lol. I told my husband he needs to mount a cup holder on it so I can ride around and drink a Margarita while I work!

I'm sorry for your damage. We lost 3 chickens yesterday, I can't say it was due to the weather, but it's still very discouraging to have an animal die under your care, and 3 in one day is worse. I'm hoping that is all, if more chicks die today I'm not sure what I'll do.

And I had a newly hatched chick drown this week. Still kicking myself over that one too.

I did have some fun giving the chicks a chopped up hard boiled egg. Some figured it out and the others saw it and much activity ensued.

Anyone hear fromm Cc yet, he is most likely still cleaning up mud..

Glad to here no serious damage was done by the storm, I had to go the long way around for a day and went thru lots of straw trying to keep everyone dry, but considering what they got in other states, we did good.

I have a processing question....

I do not know where everyone is getting my number at, but we are getting regular calls to process for people..( not people on here ). Apparently there's more and more people raising their own meat , then realizing that they can not finish the job......just wondering what a good price would be to process, I hate the packaging part all, would it be reasonable to ask them to bring coolers that I could just put them in ice water and they finish the job....

Not complaining, word of mouth is the best kind of advertising, we now have more egg customers than eggs from word of mouth, ,

Frustrated?
I will candle over the weekend but the couple turkey eggs that I did look at, I thought I was seeing faint blood rings,,,,,, I am really wanting these midget white turkey, If you know me you wold know how perfect that breed is for me.........I may need another egg source, I WILL manage to put a flock of these together.

You should probably call around to the places that do this for a living and see what they charge. I seem to recall something like $3 for chickens and $5 for turkeys, but my memory could be off on that. You can likely charge a bit of a premium since you are probably closer than the other places, or they would go there (or they are looking for a super bargain, and those are not the sort of customers you want to attract anyway).

I wish I had someplace local where I could drop off a crate of birds and a cooler with ice and come back in a few hours to a full cooler and empty crate. I hate plucking and gutting, I need to learn to skin the bird, assuming that is easier.

Sorry to hear about the losses, makes a rough few days for you... hoping it starts looking up soon for you!

Word of mouth can be a double edged sword sometimes... I know it is more good than bad, but sure can make it rough to find the resources to fill the requests sometimes! You can set up a sliding price scale....
something like $2.50 per bird, plucked, gutted and returned on ice in cooler (like you stated) with liver, heart, gizzards and neck packed in gallon bag separate if wanted
........................$3 per bird if they want them shrink wrapped as whole roasters
........................$3.50 per bird cut up and returned in gallon bags for customer to break down and pack
........................$4.00 per bird cut up and vacuum packed/shrink wrapped in serving packs (quantities based on customer written preferences)

The prices are just guidelines, I know it becomes tedious to cut apart birds, and shrink wrapping isn't cheap and is a pain sometimes

You can write up an order form with all of the options listed, including other fees such as if you pick up or deliver, cost of keeping a bird for a few days before processing if the owners can't deliver the day before butchering...
Having a standard form will allow you to just hand it out when anyone asks you questions about your process and fees and they can take it home and decide what they want.
Having a standard form will also eliminate the 'I thought it would be packed as such and such...' type comments... it will be clear and in writing

I do not think skinning is any easier....
I

Not many places local that do poultry, most won't mess with them, thing is I am more than happy to show them how for free, I can not understand why some do not want to learn..
