So today I had some of the chicks outside in a couple dog crates with the bottoms removed so they could forage and play. As I was watching them, the wind blew and ruffled some of Joel 's feathers and I saw red on his back. I panicked! I thought it was blood! So after I managed to catch him (for sine reason he's terrified of people) and look at his back, I realized that is just his new saddle feathers beginning to grow inthey are a DEEP mahogany/reddish color. Right now he's just sold black with that beautiful green Sheen to his feathers. He's going to be a stunning boy I think.![]()
Now, dumb question, when do I stop calling them chicks and start calling them chickens lol. They're almost 9 weeks old and getting pretty big!
once they hit about 10 or 12 weeks I start referring to them as 'the teenie boppers' , 'munchkins' or 'the youngsters'... technically they are pullets and cockerels until 1 year but I rarely refer to them that way in casual conversation. I don't know if their is a specific age reference to quit calling them chicks or not.
so husband is cooking
chickens are eating me out of house, I may have to sell some off because feed is nuts right now. We processed some roosters as you know, but I just dont have the heart to do hens. and of course the oldest hens are the ones the kids and I have named and welll you get the idea. I could do the younger ones but not the old ones go figure! Why do I feel so different about a hen vs a roo!!! I cant keep letting them age and live their lives out, we have about 6 freeloaders right now! But I refuse to keep doing all the feed for freeloaders, plus they seem to be the noisy bossy hens too!
