So today I had some of the chicks outside in a couple dog crates with the bottoms removed so they could forage and play. As I was watching them, the wind blew and ruffled some of Joel 's feathers and I saw red on his back. I panicked! I thought it was blood! So after I managed to catch him (for sine reason he's terrified of people) and look at his back, I realized that is just his new saddle feathers beginning to grow in

they are a DEEP mahogany/reddish color. Right now he's just sold black with that beautiful green Sheen to his feathers. He's going to be a stunning boy I think.

Now, dumb question, when do I stop calling them chicks and start calling them chickens lol. They're almost 9 weeks old and getting pretty big!

once they hit about 10 or 12 weeks I start referring to them as 'the teenie boppers' , 'munchkins' or 'the youngsters'... technically they are pullets and cockerels until 1 year but I rarely refer to them that way in casual conversation. I don't know if their is a specific age reference to quit calling them chicks or not.

Gotta love the little ones!  Escape artists doesn't even come close!

Hope you have a good afternoon and your birthday dinner is special!!

thank you, believe it or not, what i want is a steak salad:drool  so husband is cooking
yes, after hatching and feeding and loving on them, they swear you're going to eat them, stupid chicks

Hope your birthday was extra special, Barbie! And DH cooked? How in the world did you make that happen?? You must be magic.

LMP....Oh yeah, on demand, how did we ever live without it before? And your story about Ginger is cracking me up! You get 'er girl! Or you could just give her some eggs...:D

I give up. I am not going back to read 200 posts.
I have been working on cleaning the second coop in the shed. It was 6 X 8, but I took the wall down. When it (finally!) dries, I will make it only 6 X 6. I need more storage room.
Since I was too filthy to go in the house to take breaks, I began working on planting what I have for the garden. A few things will have to wait. I was getting too sore and just plain tired after five hours or so of almost constant work. Not bad for an obese woman that hasn't worked like that in ... A while!
The BBW are getting huge! 8 weeks now, and they are getting their wattles and their snoods are growing. Their noises are changing too.
The Bourbon Red poults are 4-weeks now. They had a growth spurt over the weekend, and they are pretty much red and white now. They stink to high heavens! I am cleaning their brooder daily, and switched their water to a soup bowl to stop most of the water spillage. I hope to get them outside tomorrow with a heat lamp. It figures that the temperature would go down to the 30's as soon as I get them out!

I tried to post a few days ago, but the message got lost. If you are like Stake (not picking. You are just the only one I remember) and can't wait to plant in the spring, go to Home Depot, and buy Wall O Wonder. About six weeks before the last frost, you plant your vegetable, and put a bucket over it. Slide the Wall over the bucket, and fill the channels with water. Slowly pull the bucket off the plant. The Wall will close in like a tee pee. The water heats up during the day, and keeps the plant warm during the night. One claim is that it even works in a blizzard. The 3-pack is $10.47 at my closest store. When the plant gets bigger, the Wall can be staked open.

Wow! Sounds like you got a lot done. I can't work like that anymore or I pay for it. We put our 4 week old turkeys out last week, they're doing ok, but I think it's a bit warmer here than where you are. Love the idea of the wall of water, maybe next year.

Quote: see right through it

Quote: I cant because I use the serama area for grow out too, so I dont trust other chicks growing out to be around babies, especially the HRIR and the WFBS, they seem to pick on the littles. : ( and I keep the shed door open on the serama coop it has no screen and we have a neighbors cat take his walks right in front of the door, should he see chicks they are done, its too hot to keep it closed, plus I like them getting fresh air if its not pouring cats and dogs outside

all the grow out pens are filled right now, I have two chicks that the others were picking on in the one grow out pen, I guess I could try adding them back to their group and see what happens. or slowly add a few from that pen to them, idk. lol

I have visions of a nice clean straight row of breeding pens with plenty of room for separation, but that takes money and I dont have any :( chickens are eating me out of house, I may have to sell some off because feed is nuts right now. We processed some roosters as you know, but I just dont have the heart to do hens. and of course the oldest hens are the ones the kids and I have named and welll you get the idea. I could do the younger ones but not the old ones go figure! Why do I feel so different about a hen vs a roo!!! I cant keep letting them age and live their lives out, we have about 6 freeloaders right now! But I refuse to keep doing all the feed for freeloaders, plus they seem to be the noisy bossy hens too!
