Hi does anyone in York or Lancaster have some feed suppliers, especially chick food? It is so expensive at TSC.

I asked the almost the same question the other day, I got Sunday mill an Hokes mill that will custom mill food for you but you have to buy at least 500lbs it sounds like. I get my feed from The Mill of Red Lion but I think the price is about the same as TSC approx. $18a bag depending on what it is.

I'm from York Co. I get my feed from Hoke Mills. My feed last about 6months. My chickens free range so they don't eat a much during the days. They all eat the pen pals layer pellets they sell.

Hello to all the newbies.

Sorry LMP that you have a river in your basement. We are having heavy rain here now. It was windy this morning and has calmed down. At least it will water my herbs I planted this week! I hope it stops by tomorrow, got too much work outside to get done!
Thanks...this only happens when this kind of severe weather happens, and then the water table has to be already at a high point/full. Something that only happens every couple years..last time was 3-years ago, so i really can't complain too much. I am so glad the rain has stopped here, I hope it won't stay too long in your area! This is really going to make the grass grow..hahaha, as soon as that sun pops out, we are all going to here the mowers! hahahah
Just a heads up to all, I know you all are probably conscious of this already, but the ticks are already at it...I took one off the puppy three weeks ago, now Ceasar has one..poor thing, it's on his muzzle...ouch! Make sure your checking your animals and yourselves!!

Have a good-dry day everyone!

Hello. Just introducing myself. I'm Julie from Wallingford, Pa. We just got 3 Easter eggers. Bellina, Wickett, & Salacious. They are 18 days today.

Welcome to BYC! I'm originally from Delco.

How's the hen that was attacked

I thought she was gonna die, and I still can't rule that out, but she's doing way better. She's still a bit out of it, but she goes out with to other hens and eats and drinks now

Great to hear that she's eating and drinking!

I'm pretty new to the whole chicken thing so some advice would be great. My chicks are 10 weeks old and will not go in the coop to sleep at night. They all nest down together with my two ducks under the coop. Is this normal?:idunno

As long as they're safe from predators, they're probably ok.

MC, my turkeys aren't roosting (at night) either...they bunch themselves all together on the ground even though they have the roosts. Our nights haven't gone below 40 here (I think), I was pretty worried about them this morning as their coop is right in the flood plain, and the wind was blowing the rain right INTO the straw filled box DH set out for them as they won't roost. I moved fresh dry straw into the corner where they were all huddled.

Spend 2 hours in the soaking rains this morning re tarping, moving brooders, ect....my kingdom for a Barn!!

I'm quite a ways east of you, so this may not help, but I use Browns in Birdsboro mostly. It's about $2.50 cheaper than TSC (per 50#). Even cheaper is Sauders in East Earl, less than $20 per 100#, but only mash, no crumbles, last time I checked. Also check out Sensenig in New Holland.

There are many smaller feed mills in the general area. Some will deliver and if use a lot, you can save a lot and it's even easier than buying from TSC. Try searching on google maps for "feed stores" or "poultry feed" and see what pops up.

HM, I agree that they should be fine.

When I went down to the coops fifteen minutes later, they were huddled on the roost. Not making noise, more like the way any group of baby animals sleep. I will keep the heat lamp in there until Tuesday morning (just for the nights). The BBW were so big at this age, I wasn't so worried about them. Then again, the temperature was warmer a month ago when I put them out.
The BBW can't fit in their coop anymore. I was going to fix that, but they didn't want to be in there anyway. So, I added more straw as well, and another tarp to help with the blowing rain. All is right in their world again.
Can I just say again how much I am loving the quiet, odorless house?

I don't care how cold it is the next time I need to have birds inside. They are going on the back (sun room) porch!

It's still raining pretty good here. The "pond/swamp" at the end of my road has flooded over my road. Fun fun fun. I have pulled a few ticks off of my cat and dog already as well. Only my female dog had the ticks, she has really thick fur as well.

I went to a mill down in by Hershey once, way too long of a ride for me. The feed smelt like chocolate all the way home. Mark Hersey feed mill, I don't know if that is close to York County. I think this is the website. http://www.markhersheyfarms.com/.
