Ok, I think I know what pipping and zipping are, but I want to be sure. Could someone hand me the BYC dictionary?

So pipping is when the chick makes a hole through the shell, zipping is when the chick chips away at the shell in a circle (turning itself in the egg as it chips away). Internal pip is when the chick makes a hole in the membrane without breaking the shell, but you can hear the bird chirping inside.

OMGosh...that little chippy one

...what is that one???...

I'm not sure to be honest. I think it must be an olive egger (ameracuana roo and welsummer hen). It could be the father was the welsummer roo that was also in that pen when the hen started laying, if so, that roo is not as good a strain of welsummer as my others. I free-ranged the roo in any case, and moved the hens in with my "good" roo. There is a sibling in there that looks much more like a pure welsummer. I was expecting this first hatch to have some mixed ones (the "olive eggers"), hopefully starting next week they will all be pure welsummers. 5 out of 7 eggs from the welsummer hens hatched, not bad for their very first.

A quick update on the Hawks.....spent the past two days chasing the hawks out evertime they perched near my property....x4 times on Sunday and x2 on Monday.....I really thought this pair had a nest going and this was going to be a long struggle...but they were a no show from about noon on....think my harassments may have pushed them off....or they have just learned to withdraw when they see me coming...I don't know, time will tell....

Wanted to share an interesting tidbit, while moving eggs from the incubator to the hatcher last week, we somehow missed 3 eggs that then sat out on the counter, outside of the incubator, no heat for THREE days before I noticed them. Was pretty bummed, but on a whim, marked them, and set them in the hatcher. ALL 3 hatched. The resilience of chicks amazes me.

I thought you were going to say they hatched on the counter and you found the chicks! Lol

Here are some pics from the eggs my friends classroom hatched. I think one is a rooster one is much much smaller than the other two. I always fall in love with the runt and then I find it dead. Hoping that isn't the case this time!! One has the pretty markings (lacing?) you mentioned.

Also, I took some close ups of our cochin. Any guesses on gender?
