Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

These chicks don't look like my normal blue chicks and I've been hatching blue chicks for 5 years now.

Is it possible your blue hen has been carrying lavender? If she only has a single copy of a recessive gene like lav, the only way to tell is to do a test mating with a full lav cock (which you did, in effect). Since Lav is somewhat new to Ameracaunas (been present in the gene pool with some bantams for decades, like the porcelain D'Uccles), I assumed she did not have that in her lineage, but she could.

There are threads on BYC about the combination of lav and blue, sometimes called self-blue and Andulusian blue respectively. I think you'll just have to see how they turn out, but that's part of the fun.

That's for sure!

Hardware cloth for the run. 3' width, but, half inch or inch mesh? Which do you prefer and why?

1" is fine if you are dealing with adult birds, but I prefer the half inch for at least the lowest level around a run to prevent small chicks from squeezing through and also to help prevent raccoon paws and small rodents from getting in as easy. It only needs to be about a foot high though. you could accomplish it by cutting 1' tall strips of the 1" mesh and wrapping it around the bottom of the run as a second layer, just offset by 1/2 inch to reduce the size openings, or buy another roll of 1/2" mesh and use that as your lowest level wrap.

Since the 3' is going horizontally, maybe I'll do the bottom in half and the top in inch if there's a difference in price.
They are in 2x4 garden fencing now in the middle of a fenced yard. Only critters I've seen are a groundhog!!! and the neighbor's cats who come to visit. Groundhog must go! Dog is not doing her job.

I use 2x4 welded wire over everything, even making a 2 ft "skirt" on the outside, laid flat on the ground (grass grows through it and holds it down on permanent structures, I use boards on movable coops).
Then, if there is any chance of a coon wreaking havoc by reaching through the 2x4 wire, I add 1/2 inch HW cloth, 2 ft high.

I'm pretty confident only a human or bear can breach my security.

All this egg carton talk:

Anyone know where I can get a small number of custom half-dozen egg cartons?

It might be worthwhile to ask on Craigslist for free cartons, cut them in half and put a custom label on top. Good luck!

Hope your girl Maple is doing well...amazing how us backyard folk worry about our chooks...me thinks the more experienced folk think we are nuts...(and we are)

We are nuts!

Someone had posted about Pokeweed, please be careful. I have a book that says that children have died from eating the berries. I believe you can eat the young shoots if you boil them into changes of water, but please don't rely on one opinion.
