These chicks don't look like my normal blue chicks and I've been hatching blue chicks for 5 years now.

That's for sure!Is it possible your blue hen has been carrying lavender? If she only has a single copy of a recessive gene like lav, the only way to tell is to do a test mating with a full lav cock (which you did, in effect). Since Lav is somewhat new to Ameracaunas (been present in the gene pool with some bantams for decades, like the porcelain D'Uccles), I assumed she did not have that in her lineage, but she could.
There are threads on BYC about the combination of lav and blue, sometimes called self-blue and Andulusian blue respectively. I think you'll just have to see how they turn out, but that's part of the fun.
Hardware cloth for the run. 3' width, but, half inch or inch mesh? Which do you prefer and why?
Oh, and we got a truck! So now I can go get the plywood to finish the coop/run! Think I'll frame the run in 1x3s.
Since the 3' is going horizontally, maybe I'll do the bottom in half and the top in inch if there's a difference in price.
They are in 2x4 garden fencing now in the middle of a fenced yard. Only critters I've seen are a groundhog!!! and the neighbor's cats who come to visit. Groundhog must go! Dog is not doing her job.
All this egg carton talk:
Anyone know where I can get a small number of custom half-dozen egg cartons?
Hope your girl Maple is doing well...amazing how us backyard folk worry about our chooks...me thinks the more experienced folk think we are nuts...(and we are)
